Martha Karua Breaks Away from United Opposition Rallies, Begins Own Campaign
However, Karua’s communication team has dismissed claims of a fallout, maintaining that her new campaign strategy is part of a broader plan to strengthen her party’s grassroots presence while remaining within the opposition coalition.

“To be clear: she is still in the United opposition but has launched her own grassroots campaign as part of a strategy to unseat Ruto,” her team stated, emphasizing that the PLP is focused on consolidating its national support base ahead of future joint activities.
Speaking during a rally in Karatina, Karua reaffirmed her commitment to working with other opposition leaders to challenge President William Ruto in the next election cycle. At the same time, she used the platform to outline her vision for leadership, positioning herself as a reform-driven candidate.
“We must remove this regime and refuse to replace it with the same failure wearing a different face. A new Kenya demands service-led leaders,” Karua declared, drawing applause from supporters.
Her remarks come amid intensifying political realignments as various opposition figures begin early positioning for the 2027 contest. Analysts note that Karua’s independent mobilisation could signal a dual strategy—building personal political capital while maintaining coalition ties.
Karua also took aim at what she described as the growing trend of transactional politics, urging voters to prioritise integrity and competence over short-term financial incentives.
“Leadership isn’t a competition of money or a show of extravagance. You’d rather have a leader who doesn’t give you handouts, but enables you to find your livelihood,” she said.
The PLP leader further appealed to Kenyans to support her presidential ambitions, promising to tackle corruption and restore discipline within public service institutions. Her message centered on accountability, transparency, and long-term economic empowerment.

Karua’s political journey spans decades, having previously contested the presidency in 2013, where she emerged sixth. She later vied for the Kirinyaga gubernatorial seat in 2017 but was unsuccessful. In 2022, she gained national prominence as the running mate to Raila Odinga in a closely contested presidential race ultimately won by Ruto.
Her latest move comes at a time when the opposition is seeking to present a united front against the ruling administration, even as internal strategies and ambitions continue to shape individual political paths.
Political commentators suggest that while Karua’s approach may strengthen her personal brand, it also presents a test for opposition cohesion, particularly if multiple leaders pursue parallel campaigns ahead of formal coalition agreements.
For now, Karua maintains that her focus remains aligned with the broader opposition goal of leadership change, even as she charts her own path on the campaign trail.

“As for me, my record in every role I’ve upheld is written in the work that still stands today,” she said.
