LSK Raises Alarm Over Fake Fundraisers, Distances Itself from Protest Bail Campaigns

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has sounded an alarm over fraudulent fundraising campaigns falsely linked to its name, amid growing public concern over the detention of Gen Z protesters across the country.

In an official statement issued Saturday, the LSK firmly denied any involvement in fundraising for bail or bond for arrested protesters.

“We have received reports of individuals falsely posing as LSK members, seeking funds to bail out arrested protestors,” the society said.

“We Are Not Behind It,” LSK Declares

The LSK made it clear that no such initiative has been launched or endorsed by the organisation. They warned Kenyans to avoid being duped by conmen taking advantage of the national protests.

“The ongoing fundraising activities are in no way associated with LSK. We urge the public to stay alert,” the statement warned.

They advised the public to verify all appeals for donations, particularly those purporting to be on behalf of professional bodies.

This alert comes as hundreds of young Kenyans remain detained across police stations and remand centres, many unable to raise bail after recent mass arrests during protests.

“It’s Cruel and Unjust,” Njeri Maina Speaks Out

Kirinyaga Woman Representative and lawyer Jane Njeri Maina added her voice to the growing outrage. She visited Kahawa Law Courts and met detained youths facing hefty cash bail demands.

“There are two young ladies, 21 and 24, whom I met at Kahawa Law Courts. Their guardians can’t raise KSh200,000 in cash bail,” she revealed.

Despite LSK’s official position, Njeri Maina shared a pay bill number for well-wishers willing to help secure the release of detained protesters.

She also condemned the government for allegedly weaponising terrorism laws against peaceful youth.

“These youths are traumatised. They’ve never even been in a police station. This is criminalising dissent,” she lamented.

“Let the World See This!”

Calling on international agencies to act, Njeri reminded them that they had once supported the development of the same court facility now being used to jail innocent youth.

“Over 100 Gen Zs are still locked up despite having been granted bail. Most were arrested randomly—walking home, hanging with friends, or hustling,” she stated.

She criticised the decision to remand youth in maximum-security prisons, saying it denied families access and worsened the trauma.

“This is beyond punishment—it’s emotional warfare on our youth and their families,” Njeri said.
