Legendary Narrator DJ Afro to Provide Live Commentary for Majembe vs Mbavu Destroyer
The bout, dubbed Vurugu Fight Night, will take place on Saturday, April 4, at the Kasarani Indoor Arena, with organisers projecting a packed venue and thousands of fans expected to attend.
The announcement was confirmed by comedian and media personality Oga Obina, one of the key organisers behind the event, in a statement shared on social media on April 2.
DJ Afro, whose real name is James Mwangi, is widely regarded as one of East Africa’s most influential pop culture figures, having built a massive following through his distinctive narration of foreign films. His work, spanning decades, has seen him reinterpret Hollywood, Bollywood, and kung-fu classics into locally relatable productions using Swahili, Sheng, and Kikuyu.

His signature style—blending humor, cultural references, and creative storytelling—transformed how many Kenyans consumed entertainment before the rise of digital streaming platforms. His narrations were widely distributed through VCDs, which became a staple in video halls and households across the country.
“DJ Afro will be on the mic for this one. This is not just a fight—it’s an experience,” Obina announced, underscoring the novelty of the collaboration.
Beyond the entertainment factor, the fight itself has drawn significant national attention after both fighters gained viral popularity online. The grassroots nature of the bout, combined with its rapid rise to mainstream recognition, has attracted widespread public and political interest.
President William Ruto is among high-profile figures who have publicly backed the event, pledging financial support to both fighters. The president committed Ksh1 million to each boxer, signaling a show of encouragement for emerging talent in local sports.
“We support both fighters equally as they pursue their dreams,” Ruto stated through intermediaries during the announcement of the pledge.

The growing list of sponsors has further elevated the profile of the fight, with several brands coming on board to fund different aspects of the event. In a notable development, one sponsor unveiled a brand-new Toyota Noah as the grand prize for the winner, adding a competitive edge to the already hyped encounter.
Organisers say more than 2,000 tickets have been made available for fans, with demand expected to surge as the event draws closer.
Analysts note that the involvement of personalities like DJ Afro and the backing of high-profile figures highlight a growing trend of leveraging entertainment to boost local sports.
As anticipation builds, the combination of DJ Afro’s iconic voice, strong financial backing, and public excitement is positioning Vurugu Fight Night as one of the most talked-about events on Kenya’s social calendar.
“With DJ Afro on the microphone, this will be more than a boxing match—it will be a cultural moment,” one organiser remarked.
