Kenyans Demand Elections Next Week After High Court Ruling: “Sifuna Will Win”
The reactions followed a ruling delivered by the Malindi High Court on Friday, August 7, 2026, in which Justice Mugure Thande found that, under the court’s interpretation of the Constitution, the next presidential election was constitutionally due in August 2026 rather than August 2027.
However, the court did not order the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to organise an immediate election.

Justice Thande suspended the effect of the declaration, citing the practical and national implications of attempting to cancel or bring forward the planned 2027 General Election.
The ruling nevertheless triggered a wave of reactions on social media, with some users interpreting the decision as an opportunity for an earlier presidential contest.https://dailymirror.co.ke/iebc-appoints-ruth-kulundu-as-acting-ceo-ahead-of-2027-election-preparations/https://dailymirror.co.ke/ncic-iebc-threaten-to-disqualify-15-politicians-from-2027-polls-over-hate-speech/
Several commenters focused on Sifuna, suggesting that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) politician could defeat President William Ruto if an election were held immediately.
Some of the online reactions included:
“So next month we will be saying Rais Edwin Sifuna.” — Muema Muthiani
“Zoea Rais Sifuna mapema.” — Last Seen
“Walete hio debe, mapema ndio best.” — Nderitu M Simon
Other users took a different position, arguing that an early election could work in Ruto’s favour.
“We as the silent majority are ready to make Ruto start his second term next week.” — Ruth Juma

Why Sifuna Is Trending
Sifuna’s name has gained attention in recent days following a poll that placed him ahead of President Ruto in a hypothetical two-person presidential contest.
Participants were asked to choose between Ruto and Sifuna in a hypothetical presidential race.
Sifuna reportedly received 56.3% of the responses, compared with Ruto’s 43.7%.
The results nevertheless added to discussions about Sifuna’s growing political profile and his prospects in future elections.
Sifuna’s Opposition Role
The Nairobi senator has become one of the more prominent critics of the Kenya Kwanza administration and has maintained a visible role in opposition politics.
President Ruto, meanwhile, remains constitutionally scheduled to face voters in the 2027 General Election under the prevailing electoral timetable.
The Malindi High Court ruling does not, by itself, mean that Kenyans will vote next week.

The legal and political implications of the ruling could continue to attract attention as Kenya prepares for its next General Election.
