Governor Kang’ata Sustains Injuries After a Freak Accident in Nairobi
Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has sustained a heel tendon injury following what county officials described as a freak accident during an international meeting in Nairobi on Wednesday, February 18.
In an official statement, the Murang’a County Government confirmed that the governor tripped while attending a meeting organised by Nutrition International, a Canadian government-supported organisation that partners with countries on nutrition and public health programmes.
“Murang’a County Government wishes to inform the public that H.E. Gov. Irungu Kang’ata was today attending a Nutrition International meeting in Nairobi when he unfortunately tripped and sustained an injury to his heel tendons,” the statement read.

County officials indicated that medical assessment revealed tendon damage requiring rest and limited mobility. As a result, the governor has been advised to step away from physical office engagements for approximately one month to facilitate recovery.
“Following the medical assessment, the governor is currently receiving treatment and has been advised to remain away from physical office engagements for approximately one (1) month to allow for full recovery,” the county added.
Leadership continuity assured
Despite the temporary setback, the county government assured residents that service delivery would continue uninterrupted in accordance with the Constitution of Kenya 2010, which provides for delegated executive authority at the county level.
During the governor’s recovery period, Deputy Governor Stephen Munania will represent him at official functions requiring physical presence. In addition, County Executive Committee Member for Finance Prof. Kiari will assume designated administrative responsibilities where necessary.
“The administration remains fully operational, and all county programmes will proceed as planned under delegated leadership structures,” a county official said.

Officials further confirmed that Governor Kang’ata is expected to resume participation in official meetings virtually beginning next week, ensuring oversight of key projects and policy matters continues.
Impact on ongoing projects
The incident comes at a time when the governor had been scheduled to oversee the operationalisation of Mabae Dispensary in Gatanga and Karinga Dispensary in Kigumo. The projects are part of Murang’a County’s broader healthcare expansion agenda aimed at improving access to primary health services.
County sources noted that the operationalisation of the two facilities is considered critical to enhancing healthcare delivery and ensuring prudent utilisation of public funds.
“These health facilities represent significant public investment, and their operationalisation is essential to delivering value for money to our residents,” a senior county official remarked.
The freak accident occurred during deliberations at the Nutrition International meeting, which focused on strengthening nutrition and public health initiatives in Kenya and other partner countries. The organisation has been working closely with county governments to support maternal and child health programmes, food fortification initiatives, and broader public health interventions.
Public goodwill and recovery
Messages of support and well wishes have since poured in from residents and leaders across the county, with the administration expressing gratitude for the public’s concern.

“We appreciate the prayers and goodwill from the people of Murang’a and beyond, and we look forward to the governor’s swift and full recovery,” the county government stated.
Medical experts note that heel tendon injuries, depending on severity, typically require a period of rest, physiotherapy, and restricted mobility to ensure proper healing and prevent long-term complications.
While the injury temporarily sidelines Governor Kang’ata from field engagements, county officials emphasise that governance structures remain intact and functional. Virtual coordination and delegated authority are expected to sustain the county’s development agenda during his recovery period.
As residents await his return to full duties, attention now shifts to how the county leadership team will steer ongoing health and development projects in the coming weeks.
