Government Reveals Fresh Details on How It Prepared for IShowSpeed’s Visit
The Kenyan government has revealed new details on the planning and coordination that went into the visit by American YouTuber and livestreamer Darren Jason Watkins Jr., popularly known as IShowSpeed, whose January 2026 tour of Kenya drew millions of viewers worldwide and generated significant global attention.
Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano said the government adopted a facilitative rather than prescriptive approach, allowing Kenyans themselves to shape the influencer’s itinerary in line with public expectations and online sentiment. Speed visited Kenya in early January as part of his 28-day continental tour dubbed “Speed Does Africa,” which began on December 29, 2025.
Speaking during a media engagement, Miano disclosed that the government initiated contact with Speed’s management shortly after the YouTuber announced his Africa tour, anticipating high local and international interest in his Kenya stop.

“We reached out to the managers and the organisers, who came here to the office. We started discussing his tour, and we synchronised their calendar with what we felt would meet Kenya’s expectations,” Miano said.

According to the CS, the planning process deliberately incorporated public input, with officials monitoring online discussions to understand what Kenyans wanted showcased during the visit. The strategy aimed to present authentic, everyday experiences rather than staged tourism products.
Speed’s Kenya livestream, which aired on January 11, became one of the most-watched of his career, attracting more than 8.5 million live viewers and driving a surge of new subscribers to his YouTube channel. Government officials say the exposure helped counter negative stereotypes about Africa by highlighting ordinary urban life, culture, and innovation.
Between midday and early evening, Speed followed a tightly packed itinerary that included visits to Kenyatta Market, Mukuru, and the Nairobi National Park animal orphanage. At the bustling market, he interacted with traders, sampled local dishes such as ugali and chapati, and attempted to prepare Kenyan meals under the guidance of vendors.
Miano noted that Speed’s interaction with mobile money technology was one of the standout moments of the visit.
“He negotiated prices and then paid using M-Pesa. Many countries do not even have mobile money, so this was a powerful moment in showing Kenya’s level of innovation,” she said.
The visit to Mukuru, one of Nairobi’s informal settlements, was also intended to present a balanced picture of urban Kenya, combining resilience, entrepreneurship, and community life. Officials say the decision to include the area reflected a desire to avoid sanitised portrayals and instead show real experiences.
At the Nairobi National Park orphanage, Speed participated in wildlife conservation activities and named a baby rhino “Rhinaldo,” in reference to football star Cristiano Ronaldo. Miano said the gesture resonated strongly with Kenyans and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
“We hope this inspires more international visitors to come and take part in conservation efforts, including naming baby elephants and rhinos,” she added.

Beyond Kenya, Speed’s Africa tour continued to draw headlines. While livestreaming from Lagos, Nigeria, on January 21, he reached 50 million YouTube subscribers on his 21st birthday, becoming the first Black content creator to achieve the milestone. He concluded his Nigeria visit on January 22 before proceeding to Benin and other destinations.
His 28-day tour has taken him to about 20 African countries, with Kenya standing out as one of the most viewed stops. Throughout the journey, Speed has continued wearing a beaded bracelet he received in Kenya, a detail that fans say symbolises the impact of the visit.

Government officials say the success of the tour underscores the growing influence of digital creators in shaping global perceptions and signals new opportunities for tourism promotion driven by authentic storytelling.
