NYAMIRA, Kenya – A routine construction project at a primary school in Nyamira County turned tragic after a pit latrine under construction collapsed, killing four people and leaving another critically injured in an incident that has raised fresh concerns over safety standards at public construction sites.

The fatal accident occurred on the evening of Friday, July 24, at Chinche Primary School in Borabu Constituency, where workers had been contracted to construct a toilet under the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) programme.

Authorities have since launched investigations into the collapse, with questions emerging over whether proper engineering procedures and occupational safety regulations were followed before excavation work began.

Construction Work Turns Fatal

According to eyewitnesses, the tragedy began when two construction workers descended into the deep excavation to continue work on the pit latrine.

Moments later, the walls of the pit reportedly gave way, burying both men beneath tonnes of loose soil.

Seeing the workers trapped, three other individuals reportedly entered the collapsed pit in an attempt to rescue them. However, before they could reach the victims, the unstable walls caved in once again, trapping the rescuers beneath the debris.

The double collapse transformed what had initially been a rescue mission into a larger disaster, prompting residents, emergency responders and security officers to rush to the scene.

Witnesses described frantic scenes as locals used shovels and other tools in desperate attempts to save those trapped while waiting for specialised rescue equipment to arrive.

Hours of Rescue Efforts

Images circulating widely on social media showed large crowds gathered around the collapsed excavation as police officers, emergency personnel and volunteers coordinated rescue efforts.

An excavator was eventually deployed to remove large volumes of soil covering the victims.

However, some residents alleged that during the operation, the heavy machinery accidentally struck individuals who were still trapped beneath the debris.

“The excavator was brought in to speed up the rescue, but some people believe it may have hit those who were trapped underground,” one resident claimed.

Those allegations had not been independently verified by authorities by the time of publication, and investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the rescue operation.

After several hours of excavation, four people were confirmed dead.

One survivor was pulled from the collapsed pit alive but with critical injuries before being rushed to hospital for emergency treatment.

Medical officials had not released an update on the survivor’s condition by the time of publication.

Residents Raise Safety Concerns

The incident has triggered anger among residents of Kiabonyoru Ward, many of whom questioned the planning and execution of the project.

Locals claimed the area where the pit latrine was being constructed is known for having unstable and loose soil, making deep excavations particularly risky without reinforced support structures.

“We had warned that the soil here is loose and dangerous. Proper engineering measures should have been put in place before digging such a deep pit,” a resident said.

Several community members argued that a qualified contractor with adequate technical expertise should have supervised the project from the outset.

Others questioned whether workers had been provided with appropriate protective equipment and whether temporary structural supports had been installed inside the excavation to prevent soil collapse.

Occupational safety experts note that trench and pit collapses remain among the deadliest construction accidents, particularly where excavations are carried out without sufficient reinforcement or geological assessment.

Authorities Launch Investigations

Police officers, county government officials and other investigators have since begun inquiries to determine the exact cause of the collapse.

The investigations are expected to establish whether all legal safety requirements were observed before construction commenced and whether negligence contributed to the deaths.

Officials are also expected to examine the rescue operation, including the use of heavy machinery, following claims made by residents.

The findings could determine whether criminal or civil liability arises from the tragedy.

Renewed Focus on Public Construction Safety

The accident has once again placed the spotlight on safety compliance in publicly funded construction projects, particularly those undertaken in schools under government development programmes.

Construction experts have repeatedly warned that excavation projects require proper soil testing, engineered support systems and trained personnel to minimize the risk of cave-ins.

Friday’s tragedy has left the Chinche Primary School community in mourning while families of the victims await answers over what caused one of the deadliest construction accidents reported in the county in recent years

As investigations continue, residents are calling for stricter enforcement of construction safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies and ensure that public development projects do not come at the cost of human lives.
