A dark cloud hangs over Turkana County after a police constable was brutally killed while manning KCSE exams. The shocking incident occurred on Monday, November 3, sending waves of grief and fear across the region.

“Officer Ambushed, Rifle Stolen” — Bandits Strike During National Exams

According to initial reports, suspected bandits ambushed the officer while he guarded an examination container at the Deputy County Commissioner’s office. He was accompanied by a colleague when the attackers struck.

“The officer was hit on the head and shot dead. His AK-47 rifle, loaded with 30 rounds, was stolen,” a senior police source confirmed.

“We are doing everything possible to restore peace, but the threat remains,” said a local administrator.

Weeks earlier, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced new measures to combat banditry. Speaking in Madera County on September 24, he revealed plans to arm chiefs and sub-chiefs in high-risk areas.

“We will arm chiefs and sub-chiefs with licensed guns to help fight banditry,” Murkomen declared. “This decision came after direct requests from leaders in affected regions.”

He confirmed that some chiefs in Kerio Valley had already received firearms. The move aims to empower local leadership in the fight against armed criminals.

Murkomen also issued a stern directive to individuals holding illegal firearms. He urged them to surrender the weapons immediately or face severe consequences.

“Anyone with illegal firearms must surrender them to the nearest police station,” he warned. “Failure to comply will attract stern action from the government.”

The government hopes that disarmament will reduce attacks and restore calm in the North Rift.
