NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenya’s education sector is mourning the death of former University of Nairobi Chancellor Dr Vijoo Rattansi, a renowned educationist, philanthropist and advocate for equitable access to higher education whose decade-long tenure at the country’s premier university transformed the lives of thousands of students.

Dr Rattansi’s death was confirmed on Thursday, July 30, triggering an outpouring of tributes from academic leaders, public figures, former students and members of the education fraternity who remembered her as a compassionate leader dedicated to expanding educational opportunities for disadvantaged learners.

The news was first announced by former University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama, who paid tribute to Dr Rattansi’s unwavering commitment to education and her enduring contribution to Kenya’s academic landscape.

“It is with profound sadness that I learned of the passing of Dr Vijoo Rattansi, former Chancellor of the University of Nairobi,” Prof. Kiama said in a condolence message.

He described the late educationist as a passionate advocate for learning whose generosity and leadership helped countless students pursue university education through scholarships and mentorship.

During her tenure as Chancellor between 2013 and 2023, Dr Rattansi made history as the first woman to serve as Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, a milestone that cemented her place among Kenya’s most influential academic leaders.

Her appointment came at a time when the university was expanding its role as a regional centre for research, innovation and professional training, and she became a respected figure in advancing academic excellence while promoting inclusivity within higher education.

Throughout her decade-long service, Dr Rattansi consistently championed programmes aimed at widening access to university education, particularly for students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds.

Beyond her ceremonial duties as Chancellor, she devoted much of her life to philanthropy through the Rattansi Educational Trust, a charitable foundation that has supported thousands of students by providing scholarships, tuition assistance and other educational resources.

She was also conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Letters Degree, acknowledging her outstanding contribution to academic development and humanitarian work.

Businesswoman and Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant Anne Kagure described Dr Rattansi as an exceptional leader whose commitment to education changed generations of lives.

Her death marks the end of an influential chapter in Kenya’s higher education sector.

While the University of Nairobi loses one of its most respected Chancellors, Dr Vijoo Rattansi leaves behind a legacy defined not only by historic leadership but also by an unwavering belief that education remains one of the most powerful tools for transforming lives.
