Cholera Outbreak in Migori Escalates, Spreading to Three More Sub-Counties
Migori County is grappling with a worsening cholera outbreak that has now spread to three additional sub-counties. At least 36 people have tested positive since the outbreak was first reported last week.
According to the county’s chief officer of public health, Marbel Chanzu, all patients have received treatment and been discharged in stable condition, except for one patient from Isebania who remains hospitalized.
When Did the Cholera Outbreak Begin?
Health officials declared the outbreak on February 14, after a 20-year-old from Kuria East died. At that time, six others had been hospitalized. Despite efforts to contain the disease, the latest update confirms its spread to more areas.
Chanzu confirmed new cases in Suna West, particularly around the Masara gold mines.
“We received nine positive cases in Masara. They have been treated and discharged. Other cases were recorded in Kuria West, but we have since contained the situation. Only one patient remains admitted in Isebania,” she said.
Kenya Red Cross Steps In to Support Migori’s Fight
As the county struggles to curb the outbreak, the Kenya Red Cross Society has stepped in with crucial support. The organization donated medical supplies worth over KSh 3 million to aid containment efforts.
“We have provided cholera beds, tents, hygiene supplies, and other medical items,” said Maurice Anyango, the Kenya Red Cross Society Western Kenya manager.
He added, “Our team is also on the ground assisting health officials.”
Authorities Warn Residents: Avoid Public Eating Places
Migori County Director of Public Health, Clement Ayungo, urged residents to take precautions to prevent further spread.
“There is no need to panic, but we urge everyone to remain vigilant and avoid eating in public places,” Ayungo cautioned.
Health officials have also advised residents to drink only treated water, although they ruled out water contamination as the cause. Instead, they suspect contaminated food triggered the outbreak.
The county government continues to implement measures to contain the disease, but residents must also play their part by maintaining high hygiene standards.
