Cholera Outbreak Hits Migori, Claims One Life as Authorities Race to Contain Spread
Migori County is facing a cholera outbreak, leading to the tragic death of a 20-year-old man. Rafael Mwita, a resident of Kasakuri, Nyabasi East, succumbed after testing positive at Mother Solvet Hospital.
Authorities have confirmed three more cases, with patients currently receiving treatment at Kegonga Sub-County Hospital. Health officials are working around the clock to prevent further infections.
Migori County Health Officials Confirm Outbreak
The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health, Caleb Opondi, acknowledged the outbreak and assured residents that swift action is being taken.
“On Monday, we received reports of a cholera outbreak, and unfortunately, we lost a 20-year-old man who had tested positive at Mother Solvet Hospital,” Opondi confirmed.
To curb the spread, health officers are actively tracing all contacts of the affected individuals. “The three individuals who tested positive are in stable condition,” Opondi added.
Six people who had close contact with the deceased tested negative but remain under observation at Kegonga Hospital. Meanwhile, another six have tested positive and are receiving treatment at Gitende Nursing Home.

Cross-Border Concerns Arise
Officials revealed that the deceased had recently traveled from Tanzania before falling ill. This has raised concerns about cross-border transmission, prompting stricter monitoring at entry points.
“Our multi-agency team is actively sensitizing residents on precautionary measures to curb further spread,” Opondi emphasized.
Health Officials Take Urgent Measures
The County Health Department has deployed surveillance teams to affected areas. Residents have been urged to maintain strict hygiene practices, such as regular handwashing and proper food handling.
Additionally, the county government has:
- Banned food sales in open-air markets.
- Distributed water treatment chemicals to households.
- Conducted fumigation at Mother Solvet Hospital.
Public Urged to Stay Vigilant
Authorities continue to warn residents to take necessary precautions and report any suspected cases immediately. “We are committed to containing this outbreak and preventing more deaths,” Opondi reassured.
With health teams working tirelessly, the county hopes to prevent further infections and bring the crisis under control.
