Shock as Health CS Aden Duale Suspends 40 Hospitals Over Massive Fraud Scandal

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has dropped a bombshell on Kenya’s health sector, suspending 40 hospitals from the Social Health Authority (SHA) programme over shocking fraud allegations.

Speaking during a tense Friday press briefing, Duale vowed that those found guilty will face the full force of the law.

“Therefore, the Social Health Authority has suspended these health facilities found to have engaged in corruption and theft of public resources,” the CS declared.

Fraudulent Activities Exposed

The Ministry revealed jaw-dropping details of how the facilities allegedly siphoned public funds. Investigators discovered multiple billing of patients, mislabelling outpatients as inpatients to inflate costs, and other irregular schemes.

Duale explained that the suspension will remain in place until thorough DCI investigations are complete.

“Furthermore, we will be surcharging them to recover any money already paid to them on the basis of any fraudulent claims,” he said firmly.

The CS confirmed that during the suspension period, the implicated facilities will not receive a single shilling from SHA.

Medical Staff Also Caught in the Net

It’s not just hospitals under fire. Duale also announced the suspension of eight doctors from Nairobi, Bungoma, and Kilifi counties, accusing them of directly participating in the scam.

Four clinicians linked to facilities in Nairobi and Homa Bay counties were also shown the door.

“In accordance with clause 16, sub clause 4.5 of the facility contract, SHA has immediately from this minute withdrawn the user rights for these doctors and clinical officers from all the authority and the digital health platforms,” Duale said.

He added that the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) had been informed to enforce the decision without delay.

Clear Warning to All Health Providers

Duale’s tone turned even sharper as he issued a stern caution to all healthcare workers.

“Any healthcare provider whose information is used to defraud SHA shall be held personally liable,” he warned.

He reminded practitioners that they owe Kenyans a duty of care and stressed that SHA can cover all legitimate medical procedures.

Public Names Coming Soon

The Ministry will publish the names of the suspended hospitals in an official Gazette Notice. Duale said this will ensure transparency and send a message that corruption in healthcare will not be tolerated.

As investigations continue, Kenyans wait to see which prominent hospitals will be named in what is shaping up to be one of the biggest medical fraud scandals in recent history.
