BONIFACE MWANGI’S LEGAL TEAM ACCUSES POLICE OF PLANTING AMMO, TEAR GAS TO FRAME HIM
Shock, rage, and disbelief gripped human rights circles on Sunday after Boniface Mwangi’s legal team accused the police of fabricating evidence to frame the activist on terrorism charges.
Speaking outside Pangani Police Station, advocate Njanja Maina boldly denied claims by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) that Mwangi was found with tear gas canisters and blank ammunition.
“We have seen a statement by the DCI today that there are items that were picked from his office,”
“We can confirm and state with no uncertainty that those are things which he did not have in his possession. So we do not know why they are coming up with terrorism charges,” Maina declared.
Mwangi, a renowned activist, was arrested on Saturday, July 19, at 4 p.m. He was immediately taken to his office where authorities executed a search warrant obtained through an ex parte court order. However, according to his legal team, things quickly turned suspicious.

“Boniface Mwangi was picked from his residence at around 4 p.m. and brought to his office,” Maina stated.
“The search warrant was exclusive to his office, but we can also confirm that they searched his home. We don’t know why this was done, especially since there was no arrest warrant accompanying the order.”
In a show of defiance, Maina condemned the manner in which officers allegedly extended the search illegally. The lawyer insisted that the charges are baseless and politically motivated.
Adding to the drama, activists and supporters gathered outside Pangani Police Station, chanting and waving placards as they called for Mwangi’s unconditional release.

Inside the statement issued by the DCI, police claimed to have recovered ammunition, tear gas, two mobile phones, a laptop, and several notebooks. But Maina remained firm.
“These claims are shocking. He is being held on a holding charge while they fish for evidence,” she noted.
“So far, he has fully cooperated. He is healthy and strong.”
Boniface Mwangi is set to be arraigned on Monday, July 21, on charges related to the facilitation of terrorism. The charges reportedly stem from the June 25 protests, where over a dozen demonstrators lost their lives.

Tension continues to rise as Kenyans demand truth and justice, with many warning of a dangerous slide toward repression.
