“I Will Not Leave the Opposition” – Kalonzo Musyoka Defies Pressure from Ruto Allies

Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has firmly shut down growing calls to abandon the opposition, declaring his unwavering stance amid escalating political tension.

Despite sustained pressure from Kenya Kwanza allies, Kalonzo remains unshaken. On Saturday, July 19, the seasoned politician released a strongly-worded statement, dismissing any chance of cooperating with President William Ruto’s administration.

“I will never join this rogue and criminal regime,” Kalonzo stated.
“I refuse to participate in any type of dialogue with a regime that has our children’s blood on its hands.”

This bold declaration comes after months of speculation about Kalonzo possibly softening his stance. But instead, he has doubled down, accusing Ruto’s government of using fear and violence to maintain control.

“Make no mistake: the Ruto dictatorship is not interested in peace,” he added.
“It feeds on fear, violence, and intimidation. That is their modus operandi. But we shall not remain silent nor be silenced. The spirit of resistance is alive.”

His remarks have ignited fresh debate within the political landscape, with several leaders weighing in. Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua recently urged Kalonzo to join forces with the ruling government, calling the opposition strategy divisive.

“Even if Kalonzo is humble and fears Gachagua,” Mutua said on June 17,
“he should be talking to him and telling him what is right and wrong, because the disrespect Gachagua is showing us now, he used it to claim that we cannot give enough votes.”

However, other leaders advised Kalonzo to chart his own course. Speaking in Kitui on June 9, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula emphasized personal conviction over political pressure.

“To my brother Kalonzo, don’t allow anybody to make friends or create enemies for you,” Wetang’ula said.
“Your friends are not necessarily someone’s friends, and your enemies are not someone’s enemies.”

Adding to the drama, Kalonzo voiced his outrage over the arrest of activist Boniface Mwangi. Mwangi was picked up by DCI officers at his Lukenya home in Machakos on suspicion of terror facilitation related to the June 25 protests.

“I also strongly condemn the arrest of civil rights activist Boniface Mwangi, a bold and fearless advocate for truth and justice,” Kalonzo said.
“I have directed our legal team to do everything they can to ensure his release at the earliest time possible.”

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations confirmed the arrest.

“Boniface Mwangi was arrested yesterday, July 19, 2025, by detectives at his residence in Lukenya in connection with the facilitation of terrorist activities during the June 25, 2025, protests,” read a statement from DCI on July 20.
