Even MCA Campaigns Can’t Survive on Fundraisers!” – Cherargei Mocks Maraga’s 2027 Bid Drive

His remarks come just a day after Maraga launched his official campaignhas thrown a brutal jab at former Chief Justice David Maraga over his public appeal for campaign funds ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

In a scathing post on X (formerly Twitter), Cherargei scoffed at Maraga’s fundraising drive and questioned whether it was about “votes or money.”

“Just like I advised my brother Senator Omtatah, to run a proper presidential campaign in Kenya, you need at least KSh7 billion,” he posted.

He didn’t stop there.

“Maraga should know that in Kenya, even an MCA campaign can’t be fully funded through harambees!” Cherargei added, sarcastically dismissing the former CJ’s approach.

Mockery Over Fuel, Not Just Funds

To make his point sharper, Cherargei dragged in political aspirant Morara Kebaso, who recently failed to fundraise enough just for vehicle fuel.

“If Morara Kebaso couldn’t even raise fuel money, how will Maraga fund a presidential race? Which is which—votes or money?” he quipped, triggering heated online reactions.

His remarks come just a day after Maraga launched his official campaign website on Friday, July 18, calling on Kenyans both locally and in the diaspora to donate.

The platform allows contributions from as low as KSh100 to KSh50,000, with custom donation options. Diaspora supporters can chip in between $5 (KSh647) and $25 (KSh3,237).

Maraga’s Humble Start and Bold Vision

Despite the backlash, Maraga appears unbothered. The former Chief Justice disclosed that he would personally inject a modest KSh1-2 million into his bid.

He urged supporters to volunteer their time, share ideas, and help build a movement.

Maraga officially joined the race on June 18, with a campaign centered on ending graft and police brutality, two of the country’s most pressing issues.

While critics like Cherargei ridicule his financial game plan, others applaud Maraga for attempting to redefine politics through citizen-driven campaigns.

Still, political observers remain skeptical.

Many argue that Kenya’s political machinery thrives on massive war chests, not idealism. In that world, Maraga’s honesty is refreshing—but possibly fatal.

As 2027 inches closer, the question lingers: Will Kenyans fund hope, or will big money silence new voices?
