CJ Martha Koome Urges New IEBC Team To Act Fast Ahead Of 2027 Elections

Chief Justice Martha Koome has urged the newly sworn-in IEBC Chairperson and Commissioners to move swiftly in executing their constitutional mandate ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking during the official swearing-in ceremony at the Supreme Court, Koome emphasized the importance of timely preparation.

“Unfortunately, the process of recruiting the new Chairperson and Commissioners has been protracted. The previous Commission’s term ended over two years ago, creating a leadership vacuum that hindered the Commission’s ability to fulfil its constitutional mandate,” said Koome.

“Now that the Commission has been reconstituted, I urge you to move with speed to discharge the pending constitutional and administrative tasks and to begin timely preparations for the 2027 General Elections,” she added.

A Painful Past Must Not Repeat

Koome reminded the new commissioners that Kenya’s past electoral cycles have been marred by unrest and loss.

“Our painful history of disputed elections, cycles of violence, and loss of life and property is a stark reminder that elections are not mere political events; they are matters of national security, economic stability, and human rights,” she stated firmly.

Her remarks came just moments after Erastus Edung Ethekon officially took the oath as the new Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). He replaced Wafula Chebukati, whose term ended two years ago.

Ethekon Promises Fairness

The new Chairperson pledged to remain neutral, promising to serve all Kenyans equally.

“I, Erastus Edung Ethekon, having been appointed the Chairperson of IEBC, do solemnly swear that I will at all times obey, respect, and uphold the Constitution of Kenya and all other laws of the country,” he declared.

He was sworn in alongside six new commissioners: Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Araphat Abdallah.

CJ Warns Of Eroding Public Trust

In a strong message directed at all state institutions, Koome highlighted the widening gap between the public and government agencies.

“There’s growing perception that public agencies have become disconnected from the people they are meant to serve,” she noted.

Still, the CJ expressed hope for a better future through collective national effort.

“As a person of faith, I believe this is a season for rebuilding, for repairing the breach,” she said.
