No One Wants To Overthrow Government, Ex-DP Gachagua Responds To President Ruto
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has firmly denied claims made by President William Ruto that there are plans to topple the government through ongoing protests. Speaking during a press conference on Wednesday, July 8, Gachagua dismissed the accusations, saying the opposition only wants constitutional change.
“We want to tell you that the Wantam movement is not getting you out of power outside the constitution,” said Gachagua.
“No one wants to overthrow your government. I and the people we work with are on record saying we want to remove you from the State House via the ballot.”
Ruto Vows Crackdown on Protest Planners
Earlier the same day, a visibly angry President Ruto spoke at the launch of the Police Housing Project at Kilimani Police Station in Nairobi. He lashed out at unnamed political leaders, accusing them of sponsoring chaos and threatening national stability.

“I have been quiet, and I have tolerated these people who want to change the government using unconstitutional means—but enough is enough,” Ruto stated.
“We will not allow it. We are coming for you.”
“Those plotting to remove me from office before 2027 must know we will not let them destroy this country through unconstitutional means.”
Gachagua: “You’re Creating a False Narrative”
In a strong rebuttal, Gachagua accused Ruto of fabricating a crisis to justify oppressive measures.
“This narrative you are creating—that there is an attempt to overthrow the government—is for you to have the opportunity to use the terrorism act to profile communities and to persecute leaders opposed to your administration,” he claimed.
Claims of State-Sponsored Violence on Saba Saba
Gachagua also commented on the violent protests of July 7, commonly marked as Saba Saba Day in Kenya. He claimed that the destruction was orchestrated by the state to incite fear and blame the opposition.
He accused the President of working with governors and Members of Parliament to ruin businesses and create chaos, then pinning it on those not aligned with the government.
“Kenyans Are Angrier Than You”
Mocking Ruto’s emotional speech, Gachagua said the President was now facing the consequences of broken promises.

“I saw the president wailing in anger this morning. Mr President, wailing in anger is not the solution. The people of Kenya are angrier than you are,” he said.
“Give hustlers the jobs you promised them. You cannot say other presidents have not been able to do it. You are the one who promised.”ALSO READ: Ex-DP Rigathi Gachagua Alleges Govt Dispatched Killer Squad During Saba Saba Protests
