Kenya Launches Africa’s First High-Tech New Generation Aircraft Recovery System at JKIA

Nairobi, Kenya – In a historic breakthrough for Africa’s aviation industry, Kenya has officially launched Africa’s first New Generation Aircraft Recovery System at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). This cutting-edge system promises to revolutionize airport safety and drastically reduce disruptions caused by disabled aircraft.

Unveiled on Friday, June 27, the advanced system is designed to safely and swiftly remove grounded planes from runways and taxiways. It will now ensure faster incident response times and maintain uninterrupted airport operations.

“This state-of-the-art system marks a major milestone not just for KAA but for Kenya’s aviation sector as a whole,”
said KAA Chairperson Caleb Kositany.

“This equipment will now allow us to respond faster, more safely, and more effectively in such situations—reducing delays, protecting lives and assets, and ensuring continuity in operations,”
he added.

A First for Africa, A Win for Kenya

Kenya becomes the first country in Africa to adopt such high-tech aviation infrastructure. The New Generation Aircraft Recovery System was supplied by AMS Aircraft Recovery Ltd of the United Kingdom.

Present at the launch were KAA Acting Managing Director Nicholas Bodo, AMS MD Yehuda Fishman, and key players from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), Kenya Association of Air Operators (KAAO), and IATA.

“This move confirms Kenya’s position as a leading aviation hub in the region,”
noted one official from the KCAA.

Why This Matters

As air traffic at JKIA continues to grow, so does the need for robust emergency systems. Disabled aircraft on runways can cause massive delays, safety hazards, and logistical nightmares for passengers and airline operators.

However, this new system uses over-wing lift tooling and rapid deployment mechanisms, allowing teams to clear accidents quickly and resume flights within hours—not days.

“This is not just a safety upgrade, it’s an economic shield against losses caused by flight disruptions,”
emphasized KAA CEO Bodo.

Boost to Kenya’s Global Aviation Reputation

This high-tech leap comes as Kenya aggressively positions JKIA as a top-tier aviation hub in Africa. It aligns with international safety standards and promises to attract more global carriers seeking operational reliability.

“We’re proud to say that this new system puts Kenya ahead of many regional competitors,”
Kositany affirmed.

As air travel surges and competition among regional hubs stiffens, Kenya has just taken a bold step forward—faster, smarter, safer.
