Tragedy on the Road: Several Police Officers Feared Dead in Bungoma-Webuye Highway Crash
A routine patrol turned tragic on the Bungoma-Webuye Highway after a police vehicle collided head-on with a trailer near Matisi. The impact was devastating, with several officers feared dead on the spot.
“The scene was heartbreaking. The police car was completely crushed,” one eyewitness shared, struggling to hold back tears.
The police Land Cruiser, reportedly from the Bungoma Railway Police Station, was unrecognizable. The trailer’s front was also severely damaged. The exact cause of the crash remains unclear.
Bodies Recovered, Scene of Sorrow
Images and videos showed a body lying beside the wreck, covered in a white cloth. Rescuers worked under immense pressure to recover the victims. Reports suggest that at least three officers were pulled from the wreckage, though police have yet to confirm.
“We’re still assessing the situation. Details will be shared once all officers are accounted for,” said a senior police officer at the scene.
Meanwhile, first responders, local well-wishers, and fellow officers rushed to help, trying to clear the road and assist survivors.
Not an Isolated Case
This tragic crash comes amid rising concerns over road safety involving law enforcement officers. Just recently, Corporal James Mutunga of the Northern Corridor Transit Patrol Unit was fatally hit by a speeding car near Thika. He had been clearing a stalled Tuktuk when the accident occurred.
Elsewhere, in Salgaa, teenagers driving a police officer’s car collided with a bus, losing their lives instantly. Such incidents have left the country reeling, with many calling for stricter traffic enforcement and better vehicle safety.
A Grim Pattern on Kenya’s Roads
From January to March 2025, Kenya recorded 1,139 road accident deaths, as reported by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). Though this was a slight drop from 2024, the numbers remain deeply concerning.

“These deaths are not just numbers. Behind each is a grieving family,” said an NTSA spokesperson.
Call for Change
In response, both the NTSA and police have intensified road safety campaigns. They’re now targeting reckless driving, unroadworthy vehicles, and poor enforcement.
Still, many believe more must be done to protect those tasked with protecting others. The lives lost today remind us that no one is immune to the dangers on our roads—not even those in uniform.
