Homa Bay Windstorm Wreaks Havoc, Leaves Over 17 Families Homeless

A devastating windstorm swept through Kochia ward in Homa Bay and Kayodo village in Kisumu East, leaving over 17 families homeless. The powerful storm, accompanied by heavy rains on Sunday night, tore off rooftops, destroyed homes, and left residents in distress.

Families Left Stranded

Residents of Nyarut, Kombogo, and Lower Kowili villages in Central Kochia were among the worst hit. Many families spent a sleepless night in the cold after their houses collapsed.

Area Chief Eucabeth Obila confirmed the destruction, stating, “Over 17 houses lost their roofs, leaving families vulnerable. Three churches also suffered major damage.“ Crops were washed away, dealing a severe blow to farmers who now face an uncertain future.

A Night of Horror

Mary Akinyi, a 45-year-old mother from Nyarut Village, recounted the terrifying ordeal. “I was fast asleep when the wind roared like a beast. Suddenly, the roof flew off. My children and I ran into the storm, seeking shelter at a neighbor’s house,“ she said, her voice filled with anguish.

Like Akinyi, many residents now have nowhere to call home. The destruction has left them exposed to the elements, with no immediate solution in sight.

Urgent Plea for Help

Chief Obila urged the government and humanitarian organizations to intervene. “Our people need help urgently. Many have lost everything. We cannot afford to wait any longer for aid,“ she pleaded.

Meanwhile, in Kayodo village, Kisumu East, several families are facing the same crisis. Strong winds ripped through their homes, leaving destruction in their wake. With no roofs, no beds, and no food, affected families are left clinging to hope that help will arrive soon.

Schools and Churches Damaged

This disaster is not the first of its kind in Homa Bay. Previously, strong winds forced students from Kikubi Comprehensive School and St. George’s Junior School to learn under trees after their classrooms lost roofs.

Latrines and administrative buildings were also destroyed, further straining the education sector. The March 10 winds also displaced several families in Nyandiwa trading center, Suba South, after their rental houses were left roofless.

A Community in Despair

The aftermath of the windstorm has left both Homa Bay and Kisumu reeling. Families struggle to pick up the pieces as they await government and humanitarian support.

With homes flattened and livelihoods at risk, the affected communities now look to well-wishers for assistance to rebuild their lives.
