Former Half Marathon World Record Holder Kibiwott Kandie Handed Seven-Year Doping Ban
The sanction was announced by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) on June 25, confirming that the 30-year-old athlete admitted to refusing to submit to a doping test and tampering with the doping control process.
The decision effectively sidelines Kandie until March 13, 2032, bringing what many considered one of athletics’ most promising careers to an abrupt halt.
“Former half marathon world record-holder and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Kibiwott Kandie has been banned for seven years by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) after admitting to two Anti-Doping Rule Violations, a refusal to submit to sample collection and tampering with the doping control process,” the AIU said in a statement.
Seven-Year Ban After Admission of Guilt
According to the AIU, Kandie initially faced an eight-year suspension, which is the standard sanction for the offences committed.

His period of ineligibility officially began on March 14, 2025, the date he was provisionally suspended, and will expire on March 13, 2032.
The lengthy suspension means Kandie will be unable to compete in any athletics events sanctioned by World Athletics or affiliated organisations during that period.
Investigation Began With Missed Doping Test
The case stems from an out-of-competition doping control exercise conducted on March 1, 2025, when a Doping Control Officer (DCO) and an accompanying chaperone visited Kandie’s residence in Kenya to collect blood and urine samples.
According to investigators, Kandie acknowledged the testing process by signing the electronic Doping Control Form, confirming that he understood his legal obligation to provide samples.
However, the AIU said the athlete delayed the procedure by making several phone calls before informing the officers that he urgently needed to travel to Eldoret to attend to matters relating to a construction project.
The Doping Control Officer reportedly warned Kandie that refusing to provide samples would attract the same sanctions as testing positive for prohibited substances.
Despite the warning, Kandie left the premises without completing the testing process.
“Despite signing the electronic Doping Control Form to acknowledge he was required to provide samples, Kandie delayed the sample collection process and was observed making numerous phone calls before ultimately refusing to cooperate with the DCO,” the AIU stated.
Forensic Investigation Uncovered Additional Evidence
Following the failed test, investigators launched a wider inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities also scrutinised documents Kandie submitted while challenging his provisional suspension.

However, investigators established that the document was fraudulent after Kenyan authorities confirmed it had not been issued by the agency.
AIU Head Brett Clothier said the case demonstrated the organisation’s growing investigative capabilities in uncovering attempts to evade anti-doping regulations.
Decorated Career Overshadowed
Kandie rose to international prominence after setting the half marathon world record of 57 minutes and 32 seconds during the Valencia Half Marathon in 2020.
He later returned to win the prestigious Spanish race again in 2022 and 2023, cementing his reputation among the world’s elite distance runners.
He is also responsible for two of the six fastest half marathon performances ever recorded and won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Kenya’s Anti-Doping Battle Continues
The AIU formally charged Kandie on May 6, 2026, with refusing sample collection and tampering with the doping control process.
After admitting both violations, the former world record holder accepted the seven-year suspension without pursuing further legal proceedings.

The latest decision underscores the AIU’s commitment to enforcing strict anti-doping rules regardless of an athlete’s achievements or international stature, reinforcing the message that violations of the World Anti-Doping Code carry severe consequences.
