Uhuru Criticises Ruto Over Silence on Divisive Political Remarks

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has launched a sharp criticism of President William Ruto and leaders allied to the ruling United Democratic Alliance, accusing them of tolerating and promoting divisive ethnic politics ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a Jubilee Party delegates’ meeting in Kiambu on Monday, May 25, Uhuru warned that inflammatory political rhetoric risks plunging the country into instability similar to the violence witnessed after the disputed 2007 elections.

The retired Head of State, who has largely maintained a low political profile since leaving office in 2022, expressed concern over recent public statements by some government-allied leaders, saying the remarks threatened national unity and peaceful coexistence among communities.

“Nobody is supposed to threaten a certain community because we are all Kenyans, and God knows why we are together in this country. You should not divide us,” Uhuru stated during the charged meeting attended by Jubilee officials and grassroots delegates.

Without directly naming specific individuals, Uhuru appeared to reference controversial remarks made during President Ruto’s recent political tour of the Coast region, where some leaders were accused of making ethnically charged comments directed at the Mount Kenya region.

The former president faulted senior government leaders for allegedly failing to publicly condemn such remarks.

“We have started seeing others spreading divisive ethnic politics. They don’t have shame while saying these things. They are making the remarks in front of leaders of our country, and nobody tries to stop them,” he said.

Uhuru’s remarks come amid mounting criticism directed at Hassan Omar following comments he made during a rally in Mombasa last week while accompanying President Ruto on his coastal development tour.

In the speech, Omar accused some leaders from the Mount Kenya region of historical political arrogance and economic domination, comments which triggered heated reactions online and condemnation from sections of the political class.

“It’s not that we lack knowledge. We have been struggling while you oppressed us as we watched. We have no problem with anyone, but you can’t always show us arrogance and pride. We also went to school; we are not stupid or lazy,” Omar had stated during the rally.

The remarks have since intensified political tensions as the country slowly shifts focus toward the 2027 election campaigns.

During his address in Kiambu, Uhuru cautioned against normalising ethnic mobilisation, arguing that Kenya’s painful political history should serve as a warning to current leaders.

“As a nation it is good to tell ourselves the truth. This is not the first time we are seeing leaders making divisive remarks that promotes violence and we last saw the same in 2007 that fueled the violence,” he warned.

The former president further urged politicians to focus on issue-based campaigns and development agendas rather than exploiting ethnic divisions for political gain.

At the same time, Uhuru used the gathering to explain why he remains actively involved in politics despite retiring from office nearly four years ago.

According to the former president, he had initially intended to step away from active political leadership after peacefully handing over power in 2022. However, prolonged court disputes involving the Jubilee Party forced him to stay on as party leader.

“When I left the presidency, I handed over power peacefully and stepped away in good faith. Some people saw it as an opportunity to tarnish our party. They dragged us into unnecessary court battles that should never have happened,” he explained.

Uhuru maintained that his continued involvement is aimed at stabilising the party and overseeing a smooth transition in leadership.

“I would have stepped away completely were it not for the court cases initiated by certain individuals. But here we are,” he added.

He also disclosed that Jubilee had already begun restructuring its leadership following amendments to the party constitution as it seeks to reposition itself ahead of future political contests.

The latest remarks by Uhuru are expected to further shape the growing political debate around national unity, ethnic relations, and the tone of political discourse as Kenya edges closer to the next general election cycle.
