Court Sentences 4 Men to Death Over Murder of Ex-MP George Muchai
A court in Nairobi has sentenced four men to death after finding them guilty of robbery with violence in a case linked to the 2015 murder of former Kabete Member of Parliament George Muchai. Two other individuals were handed 10-year prison terms for related offences.
The ruling was delivered on Thursday, April 9, by Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina, who found all six accused persons guilty on multiple counts, including robbery with violence and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

“The prosecution has presented sufficient and compelling evidence proving that the four main accused persons played a central role in the violent robbery that resulted in multiple deaths,” Onyina ruled.
The magistrate noted that the nature and gravity of the crime met the legal threshold required to impose the death sentence under Kenyan law governing robbery with violence.
During the trial, the prosecution argued that the attackers, armed with firearms, intercepted Muchai’s vehicle before launching the fatal assault. Evidence presented in court indicated that the gang operated in an organised manner, carrying out a series of similar attacks in Nairobi around the same period.
“The pattern of the attacks, including the use of firearms, coordination among the assailants, and the method of execution, strongly links the accused to the offence,” the court observed in its judgment.
Onyina clarified that although the two were linked to the broader criminal network, there was insufficient evidence to place them at the exact scene of the attack.

“The evidence does not directly place the two accused persons at the scene, but clearly establishes their involvement through possession of illegal firearms and ammunition,” he stated before sentencing each of them to 10 years in prison.
The murder of Muchai, who was serving his first term as Kabete MP at the time, sent shockwaves across the country and was widely regarded as one of Kenya’s most high-profile political assassinations in recent years. Before joining politics, Muchai had built a reputation as a prominent trade unionist, further elevating public interest in the case.
The court noted that the consistency in the execution of multiple robberies during that period strengthened the prosecution’s argument, pointing to a coordinated criminal enterprise.

Legal analysts say the ruling underscores the judiciary’s stance on violent crime, particularly cases involving loss of life, while also highlighting the complexities and length of high-profile criminal trials in Kenya’s justice system.
