DCI Officers Shoot Dead Gang Leader in Meru Hours After IG Kanja’s Orders

A suspected gang leader has been shot dead in Meru County following a fierce pre-dawn gun battle with detectives, just hours after Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja ordered a major security crackdown in bandit-prone regions of northern Kenya.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the incident occurred at about 2 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, in Linjoka sub-location, Igembe North, during a joint patrol involving detectives and regular police officers.

Authorities reported that officers encountered a group of approximately five men believed to be involved in criminal activities, triggering a confrontation that escalated into a deadly exchange of gunfire.

“In the intense exchange that followed, one suspect was fatally neutralised, shot in the head while the remaining four fled into the darkness, still armed and dangerous,” the DCI said in an official statement.

Gun Battle During Security Operation

Police said the suspects opened fire after being challenged by officers, prompting security personnel to return fire in what officials described as self-defence.

The slain suspect was later identified as a notorious gang leader allegedly linked to a series of violent incidents that had terrorised residents of Igembe North and neighbouring areas for months.

Investigators believe the group may have been involved in banditry, cattle rustling, and armed robberies that have plagued parts of Meru County.

Weapon Recovered at Scene

Detectives recovered a Beretta pistol loaded with three live rounds of ammunition, as well as one spent cartridge believed to have been fired during the confrontation.

The body of the deceased was taken to Nyambene Sub-County Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination, as investigators work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and the suspect’s criminal network.

“Investigations are in full swing, and a massive manhunt is underway to hunt down the fleeing accomplices before they strike again,” the agency added.

Security officials warned that the remaining suspects are still armed and pose a significant threat to public safety.

Operation Triggered by Rising Insecurity

The shootout came hours after IG Kanja announced an intensified multi-agency operation targeting banditry and organised crime across Meru, Isiolo, Samburu, and Laikipia counties.

Speaking earlier on Saturday, the police chief cited a surge in violent attacks, livestock theft, and fatalities in affected areas, including Buuri East, Tigania East and West, and Igembe North, Central, and Mutuati.

“Cattle have been stolen, several lives have been lost, and injuries have been reported. This is totally unacceptable and must be eradicated,” Kanja said while ordering the deployment of additional security personnel.

Multi-Agency Crackdown

Authorities said the operation involves specialised police units supported by aerial surveillance and rapid-response teams, with a mandate to recover stolen livestock and confiscate illegal firearms.

Officials described the deployment as one of the most comprehensive security responses in recent months, aimed at dismantling criminal networks operating across the volatile region.

Residents have been urged to cooperate with security agencies by providing information that could lead to the arrest of suspects and prevention of further attacks.

Ongoing Security Concerns

Northern and eastern parts of Kenya have long struggled with banditry and inter-communal violence, often driven by competition over pasture, water, and livestock. The problem has been exacerbated by the proliferation of illegal firearms, making criminal groups heavily armed and difficult to contain.

Local leaders have repeatedly called for sustained security operations rather than short-term deployments, arguing that sporadic crackdowns allow criminal groups to regroup once officers withdraw.

Saturday’s operation signals a renewed push by authorities to restore stability, though security experts warn that long-term solutions will require both law enforcement action and socio-economic interventions.

For residents of Igembe North, the overnight gun battle underscores the high stakes of the ongoing crackdown—and the uncertain road ahead as security forces pursue the remaining suspects still at large.
