Missing Malindi Child Found at Kenya-Tanzania Border in Dramatic Rescue

Security agencies have rescued a three-year-old boy who disappeared in Malindi on February 13, 2026, after an intense cross-border pursuit that ended near the Kenya–Tanzania frontier at Hororo.

The child was recovered moments before a suspect — identified as a 29-year-old Ugandan national — allegedly attempted to leave the country with him, in what police believe could have been a child trafficking incident.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the operation began after the boy’s mother reported that her son had vanished from the Malindi Central area while she was at work.

Investigators say early witness accounts quickly pointed to a familiar face.

Authorities revealed the suspect operated a nail salon near the family’s shop and had been seen moments before the disappearance.

In a statement, detectives explained that “witnesses reported the suspect calling the child before he suddenly went missing”.

The development triggered an urgent search, with officers collecting forensic leads and reviewing movement patterns in the neighbourhood.

Detectives soon established that the suspect had travelled southwards, prompting coordination with officers stationed in Lunga Lunga and Tanzanian security teams.

The joint pursuit culminated near the Hororo border crossing.

According to the DCI, “the suspect was intercepted just before crossing into Tanzania with the minor”.

Officials confirmed the boy appeared shaken but unharmed.

Both the suspect and the child were handed over to Kenyan border officers for processing before arrangements were made to return the child home.

An emotional reunion followed in Malindi when the toddler was handed back to his parents.

Police said “the child was reunited with his family and later taken for medical examination as a precaution”.

Doctors at Malindi Sub-County Hospital assessed the boy and confirmed he was stable.

Meanwhile, the suspect remains in custody at Malindi Police Station and is expected to face charges after interrogation.

Investigators indicated they are examining possible trafficking motives and whether the suspect acted alone.

The case comes amid rising concern over child abductions reported in parts of the country in recent years.

Security agencies say criminal networks have increasingly targeted minors, sometimes transporting them across counties or borders.

Police noted that “cross-border collaboration was critical in preventing a potential trafficking incident”.

In 2025, detectives handled several similar cases, including the recovery of a kidnapped three-year-old boy in Ruiru, Kiambu County, after suspects were arrested.

In another incident, a 14-month-old baby was rescued after being taken by a relative who fled to Kirinyaga County.

Authorities now urge parents and guardians to remain vigilant, particularly around business premises and busy public areas.

The DCI also called on members of the public to report suspicious behaviour involving children immediately.

Officials emphasised that quick reporting played a decisive role in the Malindi rescue, allowing investigators to act before the suspect crossed the border.

Police added that “community cooperation significantly increases chances of recovering missing children safely”.

The rescued boy is now under family care as investigations continue.
