Ruto Downplays Claims of Courting Kalonzo Musyoka to Join Broad-Based Government

President William Ruto has dismissed claims that he is courting Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to join his administration, insisting that his focus remains on development rather than political maneuvering.

Speaking during a media engagement on Thursday, November 13, the Head of State downplayed speculation that he was seeking to bring Kalonzo and Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP–K) leader Eugene Wamalwa into a broad‑based government.

“As to matters regarding the relationship between political parties, those are discussions that are just politics. I am not here to discuss matters of politics,” Ruto stated.

Focus on Development

The President emphasized that his priority is delivering on development projects for Kenyans, particularly in Ukambani, where he pledged to accelerate infrastructure and service delivery. He reiterated that political discussions would only be entertained at the appropriate time.

“I am here to discuss the development of the great people of Ukambani, and I will limit myself to that. Matters of politics we will discuss when the right time comes, and everyone knows how they will handle their political issues,” he added.

Ruto maintained that every politician, including those in opposition, has the right to make independent decisions about their political future.

Reports of Political Realignment

The remarks come amid reports that Ruto was actively courting Kalonzo and Wamalwa in what sources described as a strategy to isolate his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua. The claims suggested that the President was seeking to broaden his political base ahead of the 2027 General Election.

However, both Kalonzo and Wamalwa have publicly rebutted the allegations, dismissing suggestions that they were planning to resign from the opposition and align with Ruto’s administration. Their statements have sought to reaffirm their commitment to opposition politics while rejecting speculation of imminent defections.

Completing Uhuru-Era Projects

During the same engagement, Ruto pledged to complete most of the projects initiated under former President Uhuru Kenyatta within the next few months. He noted that his administration had prioritized continuity, drawing parallels with Kenyatta’s completion of projects started during Mwai Kibaki’s tenure.

“The former President recently said that it took him about two and a half years to complete most of the projects started by his predecessor, and I have also done just like him,” Ruto said.

The Head of State highlighted ongoing infrastructure works, energy projects, and service delivery initiatives as part of his administration’s commitment to sustaining development momentum.

Political Context

Analysts say Ruto’s remarks reflect an effort to distance himself from political speculation and maintain focus on governance. The President’s denial comes at a time when Kenya’s political landscape is marked by shifting alliances and speculation about opposition leaders’ future roles.

Observers note that while Ruto has consistently emphasized development, the debate over political realignments underscores the fluid nature of Kenyan politics, particularly as the country edges closer to the 2027 elections.

Conclusion

By downplaying claims of courting Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa, President Ruto has sought to reaffirm his administration’s focus on development while deflecting attention from political speculation. His pledge to complete Uhuru‑era projects further signals continuity in governance, even as questions linger over potential realignments in Kenya’s political arena.
