The Ministry of Education has officially unveiled the 2026 school calendar, sparking reactions from parents, teachers, and learners nationwide. The new schedule, signed by Principal Secretary Julius Bitok, outlines term dates, holidays, and national exams for all basic education institutions and diploma colleges.
“Schools Will Open January 5, 2026”
According to the circular dated October 9, 2025, all schools will reopen for first term on January 5, 2026. Learners will study for 13 weeks before closing on April 2.
“The Ministry has structured the calendar to ensure consistency and adequate learning time,” Bitok stated.

A five-day half-term break will run from February 25 to March 1, giving students and teachers a much-needed pause.
“Second Term Begins April 27”
After a three-week April holiday, schools will resume for second term on April 27. This term will last 14 weeks and end on July 31.
“We’ve ensured learners get sufficient time to cover the syllabus,” Bitok added.
Another half-term break is scheduled from June 24 to June 28. Learners will then enjoy a three-week holiday from August 3 to August 21.
“Third Term Is Short but Crucial”
“Exams will begin promptly after the third term to avoid delays,” Bitok confirmed.
The exams will cover all levels under the new competency-based curriculum, marking a significant shift in Kenya’s education system.

“Diploma Colleges Follow Similar Structure”
“Colleges will break for the December holiday from November 9 to January 1,” the ministry noted.
This alignment ensures uniformity across all education levels.
“No Visits During Third Term”
The ministry has maintained its ban on school visits during third term. This directive aims to minimize distractions and maintain exam integrity.
“Activities and visits during third term remain prohibited,” Bitok emphasized.
As families prepare for the new academic year, the ministry urges everyone to stay informed and plan ahead.
