Nairobi woke up to a storm of controversy after Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers arrested former Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) Director General Philemon Kandie in a dramatic night raid. The arrest, which took place on Friday, October 3, has ignited public debate and raised serious questions about accountability in public office.

“He Was Taken in the Night”—EACC Storms Kandie’s Home

According to sources, EACC officers raided Kandie’s residence under the cover of darkness. They seized electronics, documents, and other items believed to be linked to ongoing investigations.

“He was taken to Integrity House for questioning,” an EACC official confirmed. “We are probing allegations of graft and financial mismanagement,” they added.

Although the exact charges remain unclear, preliminary reports suggest the arrest is tied to Kandie’s tenure at KeRRA.

“I Resign Effective July 11”—Kandie’s Sudden Exit Raises Eyebrows

Kandie resigned from his post on July 11, two years before his term ended. His resignation letter cited a three-month notice and 45 days of annual leave.

“This letter serves as formal notification of my resignation,” Kandie wrote. “My last day will be October 10, 2025,” he added.

KeRRA confirmed his departure but did not disclose the reason.

“He Funded Chaos”—Petition Linked Kandie to June 25 Protests

On July 2, a petition was filed at the High Court seeking Kandie’s removal. The petitioner accused him of financing violent protests using state funds.

“He funneled money through shell companies and rogue contractors,” the petition alleged. “These entities were linked to KeRRA,” it added.

Intelligence reports reportedly tied procurement accounts and logistics to groups involved in the unrest.

“We Demand Transparency”—Public Reacts to Arrest

Kenyans have expressed mixed reactions. Some demand swift justice, while others call for a fair trial.

“If he’s guilty, let the law take its course,” said a Nairobi resident. “We need transparency in public service,” another added.

The arrest has reignited calls for stronger oversight in government agencies.

“New Leadership in Place”—Kandie Replaced by Magondu

Following Kandie’s resignation, Jackson Magondu was appointed acting Director General. He previously served as Director of Planning, Design, and Environment.

“We’re committed to restoring public trust,” Magondu said.

As investigations continue, all eyes remain on EACC and the judiciary.
