Truck Drivers Demand Urgent Meeting With Ruto Over Graft, Insecurity, and Neglect

Kenya’s long-distance truck drivers have sounded the alarm. In a powerful open letter, they called on President William Ruto to urgently convene a Presidential Drivers’ Roundtable. Their message was clear: the transport sector is collapsing under neglect, corruption, and insecurity.

“We Keep Kenya Moving, Yet We’re Treated Like We Don’t Exist”

The Long-Distance Drivers and Conductors Association painted a grim picture of life on the road. They described long hours, poor pay, and zero job protections.

“Mr President, the transport sector is the backbone of our economy,” the letter began. “Yet, despite our contributions, we remain invisible, seen only when tragedies strike or when levies are imposed,” they added.

They urged the government to bring together drivers, ministries, and agencies to address the crisis.

Mental Health Crisis and Inhumane Conditions

The drivers revealed that many suffer from stress, fatigue, and mental health issues. However, they lack access to care or support systems.

“We operate under inhumane conditions. No contracts. No rights. No recourse,” the letter stated.

They blamed the Ministry of Labour for ignoring their plight, leaving thousands vulnerable and voiceless.

NTSA, KeNHA, and KRA Accused of Graft and Harassment

The letter didn’t hold back. It accused state agencies of inefficiency and corruption. Drivers claimed rogue officers routinely extort money using fake charges and arbitrary detentions.

“We face harassment daily. We’re treated like criminals, not professionals,” said a driver from Mombasa.

They also flagged dangerous routes in North Eastern, Rift Valley, Nyanza, and the Coast. Hijackings, attacks, and road insecurity have made their work life-threatening.

“No Government Has Ever Recognised Our Role”

The drivers expressed deep frustration. They feel undervalued despite playing a central role in Kenya’s economy.

“We shoulder the risks and sacrifices that keep Kenya connected and competitive,” they wrote. “Yet, no government has ever fully recognised our efforts,” they added.

They demanded the establishment of a National Drivers’ Week to honour their contribution and raise awareness.

Public Sympathy Grows as Drivers Speak Out

Kenyans online have rallied behind the drivers, calling for reforms and respect.

“Without drivers, the economy stops. They deserve dignity and protection,” said a concerned citizen.

As pressure mounts, all eyes are now on President Ruto. Will he listen to the voices that keep Kenya moving?
