Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi Secures Temporary Protection in Party Name Dispute
The Tribunal’s decision on Tuesday, August 25, came after a day-long legal contest over the proposed political party’s identity and registration.
The interim orders allow Sifuna’s faction to pursue reservation and registration of the name Linda Mwananchi, pending the determination of the dispute before the Tribunal.
The decision provides temporary protection for the Sifuna-led movement as it seeks to establish a formal political identity ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The dispute, however, has pitted the movement against officials of the Liberty National Democratic Alliance (LINDA) Party, who claim they have prior rights to the name and associated political identity.
LINDA officials say they began the party registration process in November 2024 and have since built a membership network across the country.

They maintain that their party’s name, symbols and identity should not be confused with the Linda Mwananchi movement.
The party’s advocate previously told reporters that the registration process had reached an advanced stage after the Registrar requested additional documents.
“The Registrar of Political Parties, having confirmed that our client complied with every other thing, requested that they provide just a single set of documents, which they have since provided. The only thing that is waiting is the issuance of the registration certificate,” the advocate stated.
LINDA officials have accused the Sifuna-led faction of using a name and political identity that they claim belongs to their party.
They have warned that they could pursue further legal action if the dispute continues.
The case comes at a time when political parties and emerging movements are positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
The movement’s attempt to reserve the name was challenged after the ORPP reportedly declined to reserve it, prompting the Sifuna-led side to seek intervention from the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal.
The Tribunal’s interim decision does not amount to a final determination of ownership of the name. Instead, it preserves the position of the parties while the substantive dispute is considered.
For Sifuna’s faction, the temporary orders provide room to continue its political preparations without another entity securing the disputed name.

For the LINDA Party, the dispute remains a question of protecting what officials describe as an established political identity.
