Ruto Hints at Making Meru Kenya’s Next City

President William Ruto has hinted at transforming Meru town into Kenya’s fifth city, igniting excitement across the county.

Speaking on Saturday afternoon at Makutano Junction in Meru town, Ruto said the idea had long been in his mind.

“The governor has said he wants Meru to become Kenya’s next city. Do you want Meru to become the next city?” Ruto posed.

“So, do you think I did not know that? I already had that idea in mind,” he added as the crowd cheered.

Ksh2 Billion to Boost Meru

Moreover, the President announced that his government would disburse Ksh2 billion for the construction of 16 modern markets across Meru County.

This move, he noted, would boost trade and prepare the region for city status.

“These new markets will make Meru a commercial hub. We are serious about making this happen,” Ruto affirmed.

Sewer System Must Be Fixed

In addition, Ruto issued a direct order to the Water and Sanitation Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa.

“By December this year, I want the Meru sewer system complete. No delays. The people of Meru deserve better,” he stated firmly.

The improvement of sanitation is part of a broader plan to attract investors and ensure the town meets city standards.

Governor’s Call Answered

Ruto’s speech came moments after Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma pleaded with him to upgrade the town’s status.

“Our big problem, which was the sewer system in Meru, will be completed,” Mutuma told the President.

“We want the next city to be clean once the sewer system has been rectified,” he added.

Mutuma pointed out that several development projects were already completed, making Meru ready for city status.

Following Nakuru’s Path

Significantly, this development mirrors Nakuru’s city upgrade in 2021. The Senate voted to elevate Nakuru from a municipality to a city.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta then officially awarded it a city charter due to its rapid population and economic growth.

Similarly, Meru appears to be ticking all the right boxes:

• A large population
• An expanding infrastructure network
• A growing business hub

City Criteria in Sight

To be named a city in Kenya, a town must:

• Have a population of at least 250,000
• Present a viable city development plan
• Demonstrate strong revenue generation capacity

Now, with strong political will and visible projects, Meru’s city dream is closer than ever.
