NYS Launches Nationwide Recruitment Drive for Young Kenyans
In a public notice issued on Monday, March 16, the agency confirmed that the recruitment will take place across all sub-counties and run for six days, concluding on Saturday, March 21. The exercise follows earlier announcements inviting eligible youths to apply for various positions within the service.
“The National Youth Service (NYS) nationwide recruitment exercise has officially kicked off today across all sub-counties, as earlier advertised. The exercise will run from 16th to 21st March 2026,” the statement read.
Authorities urged interested applicants to report to designated recruitment centres within their respective sub-counties, noting that participation is open to qualified young people seeking training and employment opportunities.
“Eligible young Kenyans are encouraged to turn up in large numbers at their respective sub-county recruitment centres and take advantage of this opportunity to serve the nation while gaining valuable skills, discipline, and training,” the agency added.
Established as a state corporation, NYS plays a central role in youth empowerment through paramilitary-style training, vocational education, and participation in national development programmes. Recruits typically undergo rigorous physical and technical training designed to instill discipline, teamwork, and practical skills.

Through its programmes, the service equips participants with competencies in fields such as construction, agriculture, mechanical engineering, electrical work, and community development. Many graduates go on to pursue careers in the private sector, public service, or entrepreneurship.
In addition to training, NYS personnel are frequently deployed to support government initiatives, including infrastructure development, disaster response operations, environmental conservation projects, and public works. Analysts say the agency has become a critical reserve workforce during national emergencies, from floods to drought mitigation efforts.
The recruitment drive also comes amid high youth unemployment rates, making such opportunities particularly significant for school leavers and job seekers.
The advertised roles span a wide range of technical and support functions, including drivers, plant operators, electricians, carpenters, plumbers, mechanics, welders, agricultural workers, band members, secretaries, and general duty personnel. Officials say the diversity of positions reflects the agency’s broad operational mandate.
Prospective applicants were directed to obtain the Application for Employment Form through the Public Service Commission of Kenya website. Completed forms can be submitted electronically or by post to the NYS Commandant General at the service’s headquarters in Nairobi.
The deadline for submitting formal applications for the advertised posts has been set for March 18, 2026, meaning candidates participating in the recruitment exercise must act promptly to meet the requirements.

Observers note that beyond employment prospects, NYS training is widely regarded as a pathway to personal development, leadership skills, and civic engagement. However, the agency has also faced scrutiny in the past over governance and accountability issues, prompting reforms aimed at strengthening oversight and transparency.
For many young Kenyans, the ongoing recruitment represents a rare opportunity to gain structured training, stable income prospects, and a chance to contribute to national development.

As the exercise continues across the country, authorities have urged applicants to follow official procedures and avoid intermediaries, warning against fraudsters who may attempt to exploit the recruitment process.
