Luhya Council of Elders Endorses Edwin Sifuna’s 2027 Presidential Bid, Calls for United Opposition Candidate
The endorsement, announced during a press briefing in Trans Nzoia County on Sunday, August 2, places the Nairobi Senator among the growing list of opposition figures being publicly mentioned as potential contenders for the country’s top seat, even as coalition negotiations continue behind the scenes.
Leaders of the forum said the opposition should avoid internal divisions that could weaken its prospects at the ballot, arguing that presenting multiple presidential candidates would only split votes and benefit the ruling coalition.
According to the elders, Sifuna has steadily built national appeal beyond his Western Kenya political base and has demonstrated the leadership qualities required to unite Kenyans under a common agenda.
“Our son Edwin Sifuna has been accepted by a lot of Kenyans. And, since he is our son, we naturally want to state very clearly that we support his efforts of wanting to join others in the political arena as we see it today,” said Luhya Elders Forum Deputy Chairperson Noah Wekesa.
Wekesa noted that while the endorsement reflected the community’s pride in one of its own, the forum’s decision was also informed by what it described as Sifuna’s expanding influence across different regions of the country.
He argued that the Nairobi Senator had increasingly positioned himself as a national political figure through his engagements with leaders from diverse political formations and his outspoken stance on governance and economic issues.
They said the lessons from previous elections demonstrate the importance of presenting a united front against an incumbent administration.
The forum’s endorsement also highlighted what its leaders described as Sifuna’s organic rise within the opposition.
According to Forum Secretary General Peter Ludava, the senator’s growing popularity had not resulted from negotiated political arrangements but rather from consistent engagement with national issues.
“He has emerged naturally, and we think he will continue to emerge. And we believe even the others will support him to be the president,” Ludava stated.
Several opposition formations are currently holding discussions on the possibility of presenting a single presidential candidate, with leaders repeatedly acknowledging that unity will be crucial in challenging President William Ruto during the next General Election.
Sifuna currently serves as the leader of the Linda Wananchi Movement and has remained one of the government’s most vocal critics.
In recent months, he has frequently criticised the Kenya Kwanza administration over the cost of living, taxation, governance, accountability and public debt, positions that have helped elevate his national political profile.
Political analysts say the endorsement by the Luhya Elders Forum reflects the early political alignments already taking shape more than a year before formal campaign activities begin.
Community endorsements have historically played an influential role in Kenya’s politics, particularly during the early stages of coalition-building, although they do not necessarily determine the eventual presidential nominee of a political alliance.
At the same time, the opposition landscape remains fluid.
Several prominent leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, and other coalition principals, continue to feature prominently in discussions over possible presidential tickets or coalition arrangements.
For now, the Luhya Elders Forum says its position is clear: the opposition should unite around a credible candidate with national appeal, and in its view, Edwin Sifuna has demonstrated the qualities necessary to lead that effort.
Whether other opposition parties embrace the endorsement remains to be seen, but the declaration is likely to add fresh momentum to the ongoing debate over who should carry the opposition’s presidential flag in Kenya’s next general election.
