Kenya to Hold New Trade and Security Talks With Trump Administration in December 2026
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the preparations on Wednesday, November 4, following a meeting between senior Kenyan officials and representatives of the US Embassy in Nairobi.
The meeting was held ahead of the Fourth Session of the Kenya-US Bilateral Strategic Dialogue (BSD IV), which is expected to strengthen cooperation between the two countries across several sectors.
The officials reviewed progress in bilateral relations since the establishment of the strategic dialogue framework in 2019 and discussed priorities for the upcoming meeting.

According to the ministry, both countries intend to strengthen cooperation in trade and investment, artificial intelligence, economic prosperity, peace and security, healthcare, food security and development.
Democratic governance and people-to-people exchanges will also feature in the discussions.
“Both delegations reaffirmed their commitment to advancing a mutually beneficial partnership anchored in shared interests, mutual respect and a common vision for prosperity, regional stability and sustainable development,” the ministry said.
Kenya and US to Sign New Four-Year Cooperation Framework
The proposed agreement will provide a roadmap for cooperation between the two countries over the next four years, outlining priority areas and opportunities for joint programmes.
The framework comes as Kenya seeks to strengthen its economic relationship with the United States, particularly through increased access to the American market and new investment opportunities.
Washington remains an important trading and development partner for Nairobi, with cooperation extending beyond commercial activities to include regional security and diplomatic engagement.
The new framework is expected to guide how the two governments coordinate their priorities and implement joint initiatives.
Trade Agreement and AGOA Feature in Kenya-US Relations
Trade is expected to be among the key issues during the December negotiations, as Kenya continues discussions with Washington on a reciprocal trade agreement.
The talks follow the extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which provides eligible African countries with preferential access to the US market.
Kenya is among the beneficiaries of AGOA, particularly through its textile and apparel industry, which relies heavily on exports to the United States.

A longer-term trade arrangement could provide additional opportunities for Kenyan businesses, although the details of any proposed reciprocal agreement remain subject to negotiations.
Security Cooperation Remains a Priority
Beyond trade, Kenya and the United States maintain close security and diplomatic relations.
Washington considers Nairobi an important regional partner in efforts to promote stability, counterterrorism operations and peace initiatives, particularly in the Horn of Africa and Somalia.
Other priorities, including healthcare, food security, artificial intelligence and development assistance, reflect the broader scope of the relationship.
December Talks Follow US Midterm Elections
The planned meeting will take place weeks after the November 2026 US midterm elections, which are expected to shape the political environment in Washington.
The discussions will offer Kenya an opportunity to engage the Trump administration on its economic and strategic priorities while seeking to maintain cooperation with the United States.

The signing of the 2026-2030 framework is expected to set the direction of Kenya-US relations for the next four years, with both governments seeking to advance shared economic and diplomatic interests.
