KDF Colonel Who Survived Crash That Killed Francis Ogolla Emotionally Reflects on Healing Journey

Exactly one year ago, tragedy struck the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the nation. On April 18, 2024, a military chopper carrying General Francis Ogolla and 11 others crashed in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The helicopter had just taken off from Cheptulel Boys Secondary School. It was the first of three choppers on a mission to assess security in banditry-hit regions before school reopening.

Sadly, at 2:20 PM, the chopper plummeted. Ten soldiers, including General Ogolla, lost their lives instantly. Only two survived.

Survivors Reunite, Speak from the Heart

At a moving commemoration event held at Moi Air Base in Nairobi, the two survivors — Colonel Kasaine Ole Kuruta and Karanja Mogire — reunited.

Colonel Kasaine, emotionally reflective, spoke on his long, painful road to recovery.

“It’s been 365 days that remind us of the privilege to be alive,” he began.

“I’ve learned to treasure time with loved ones. I grieve in peace and choose to live each day in memory of those who couldn’t.”

He thanked the KDF leadership and medical team for their unwavering support.

“I’m deeply grateful to those who walked with me through my healing,” he said.

Major Magondu’s father, speaking for bereaved families, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the support they’ve received.

A Day of Pain, Hope, and Healing

General Charles Kahariri, the current Chief of Defence Forces, called it a day of reflection, resilience, and remembrance.

He acknowledged the sacrifices of the fallen and urged families to pray for those who post hurtful comments online.

“Some social media comments may be insensitive,” he said. “Let us respond with prayer, not bitterness.”
