Hunt for Killers: NPS Urges Witnesses to Speak Up in MP Were’s Shocking Murder
Police Call for Public Help After Cold-Blooded Killing
In a somber statement on April 30, Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga detailed the horrifying final moments of the lawmaker’s life.
“Further details gathered at the hospital confirmed the deceased to be Honourable Charles Were, MP for Kasipul,” Nyaga confirmed.
Brazen Attack at Busy Junction
Nyaga revealed that at around 7:30 p.m., Were’s white Toyota Crown stopped at a red light on Ngong Road near the City Mortuary roundabout. Eyewitnesses described a chilling scene: a motorcycle, carrying two men, pulled up beside the vehicle.
Suddenly, the pillion passenger jumped off, approached Were’s car, and fired multiple shots at the passenger side. The shooter then leapt back onto the waiting motorcycle, and the pair sped off into the night.
“The nature of this crime appears to be both targeted and premeditated,” Nyaga stated grimly.
Heroic Rush to Hospital Ends in Tragedy
Immediately after the ambush, the car’s driver and another male passenger, miraculously unhurt, sped towards Nairobi Hospital. Sadly, despite their desperate effort, Were was pronounced dead on arrival.
Nation Mourns, Police Vow Justice
The police force strongly condemned the murder, labeling it both heinous and senseless. In their statement, they assured Kenyans that no effort would be spared in tracking down the killers.
“The Service extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, parliamentary colleagues, constituents, and close associates,” they expressed.
While investigations are ongoing, the NPS stressed that it is too early to release additional details. Commanders and detectives are working tirelessly at the scene to reconstruct what happened.
Meanwhile, the police urged anyone who may have witnessed the shooting to urgently contact their nearest police station.

ODM Demands Swift Justice
The shocking murder sent shockwaves across the nation. Kenyans, especially fellow politicians, flooded social media with messages of anger and grief. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, under which Were was elected, called for immediate and thorough investigations.
ODM highlighted that Were had been in Parliament until 6:15 p.m. that day, diligently handling official business before heading home.
A Life Cut Short
Were was in his second term, having first been elected in 2017 and reelected in 2022 on the ODM ticket. His assassination leaves a painful void in Kasipul and across the country.
This tragic loss has not only left his family shattered but has also reignited urgent conversations around the safety of public officials.
