Shock and Sorrow as Kasipul MP Charles Were Is Gunned Down in Nairobi

Kenya is mourning the tragic and sudden death of Kasipul MP Charles Were, who was shot dead on Wednesday evening in Nairobi.

The chilling incident occurred near City Mortuary roundabout at around 7:00 PM. Witnesses say two assailants on a motorcycle trailed the legislator before one of them dismounted and shot him at close range.

Final Moments Turn Deadly

According to eyewitness accounts, the gunman calmly approached Were’s car and fired, targeting the MP. His driver remained unharmed, raising fears that Were was specifically targeted.

Efforts to save the lawmaker were made immediately. He was rushed to Nairobi Hospital, but sadly, doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

A Nation in Mourning

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), under whose ticket Were was elected, released a heartfelt statement.

“While we join his constituents, the people of the great county of Homa Bay, his family, colleagues and friends in mourning, we call on the police to investigate the shooting incident and bring the culprits to book,” the statement read.

The party revealed that Were had been active in Parliament throughout the day and only left the building at 6:15 PM, barely an hour before the attack.

Rising Fear and Demands for Justice

This brutal assassination has sent shockwaves through the political landscape. Many leaders are now demanding quick investigations, calling for enhanced security for public officials.

Though the motive behind the killing remains unclear, the fact that the driver was spared has only deepened public suspicion that Were’s murder was well-planned and targeted.

Security agencies are under intense pressure. Kenyans want answers, not just condolences.

A Life Cut Short, A Legacy Remembered

Charles Were was in his second term as MP. First elected in 2017, he retained his seat in 2022 on an ODM ticket.

His death leaves a deep void in the Kasipul constituency, where many viewed him as a rising leader with a promising future.

Now, families are grieving. Supporters are stunned. And Kenya is once again confronting the grim reality of political violence.

What Happens Next?

As detectives comb through the evidence, the country waits. But one thing is clear—Kenya has lost more than a politician. It has lost a son, a leader, and a symbol of hope.
