Game Changer: Boda Boda Riders to Access Medical Insurance for Only KSh 50 Per Week
Kenya’s boda boda industry is set for enhanced safety and financial protection as the government and private stakeholders roll out affordable licensing and insurance solutions for riders.
In a joint effort to improve road safety, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and other stakeholders have launched an initiative allowing boda boda riders to acquire driving licenses by contributing KSh 100 daily. This program, dubbed ‘Licence na Mia,’ aims to subsidize training costs for motorbike riders, equipping them with essential skills in road safety, defensive driving, and emergency response.
Affordable Health Insurance for Boda Boda Riders
Parallel to this effort, Expendo Mobility has introduced a low-cost insurance program tailored for boda boda riders. The initiative enables riders to access accident and hospitalization coverage by contributing as little as KSh 50 daily.
Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Expendo Mobility Director Paul Mwandoe emphasized the urgent need for inclusive and tech-driven micro-insurance solutions catering to informal and mobile workers.
“Many riders operate in high-risk environments with minimal or no coverage in case of accidents, injuries, or medical emergencies. Traditional insurance is often expensive, rigid, or complicated for their needs. Our goal is to bridge this gap by offering flexible, affordable, and accessible insurance plans,” Mwandoe explained.
The program, known as Expendo Hosi Bill, covers hospital bills, accident-related medical expenses, and even last rites benefits. Riders can enroll through a simple process via WhatsApp, field agents, SACCOs, or the Expendo website, ensuring seamless access to the insurance plan.
“We actively engage SACCO leaders, conduct safety awareness campaigns, and collaborate with local governments to encourage structured insurance adoption,” Mwandoe added. “This small weekly investment can save riders thousands in out-of-pocket expenses while providing financial security for their families.”
Expanding Reach Across the Country
Expendo Mobility has been actively onboarding boda boda riders onto the insurance program in various counties, including Nyeri, Kibra, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, and Mombasa, with plans to expand further across the country.
The ‘Licence na Mia’ initiative, spearheaded by the Automobile Association of Kenya and NTSA, aims to enhance road safety by ensuring riders receive proper training. By reducing the financial burden of licensing and insurance, these initiatives mark a significant step toward professionalizing the boda boda industry and safeguarding riders against financial and medical hardships.
With structured training and flexible insurance solutions, boda boda riders now have an opportunity to operate more safely while securing their financial well-being in the face of unforeseen accidents.
