Infighting Rocks Gachagua’s Camp as Allies Reject His Game Plan

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is encountering increased scrutiny as internal fractures emerge within his political circle. Some of his allies are now questioning his leadership approach and regional-centric strategy ahead of the 2027 elections.

Although Gachagua has not officially declared presidential ambitions, his attempts to consolidate opposition against President William Ruto are being weakened by dissent from within. Concerns over his combative style and strong focus on the Mt Kenya region have raised fears that he may alienate potential allies crucial for forming a broader national coalition.

Recent criticism has come from notable figures, including activist George Morara and Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba. Both have urged Gachagua to adopt a more inclusive strategy, warning that his current path could be limiting his political reach.

Despite these tensions, Gatanga MP Edward Muriu, a close ally, has downplayed the divisions, characterizing them as a normal part of democratic discourse. He emphasized, “Nobody is perfect—we build each other.”

The first significant defection from Gachagua’s camp came from Gen Z activist Kebaso, whose Inject Party cut ties with his faction. Kebaso accused Gachagua of promoting tribal politics, a move that further exposed the rift within the opposition. In a widely shared social media post, Kebaso criticized leaders prioritizing ethnic interests over national unity, intensifying the ongoing debate about Gachagua’s political vision.

Adding to the growing chorus of concerns, Wamuchomba reiterated that for Gachagua to mount a credible challenge against Ruto, he must broaden his political appeal beyond the Mt Kenya region. Her remarks reflect a growing belief that his current approach may be too narrow to secure widespread national backing.
