William Ruto Stunned as MCA Reminds Him of His New Nickname: “Wamekuita El Chapo”
Speaking on Thursday, March 13, Ruto joked about the growing list of names Kenyans have given him since his 2022 election victory. He expressed mock frustration, wondering if citizens would keep adding more.
“I want to ask you people of Nairobi. Aren’t you going to kill me with new names? You started by giving me the name Hustler, then you called me Survivor. Then you guys gave me the name Zakayo. Now I hear you are calling me Kasongo,” Ruto quipped.
He playfully questioned the crowd, asking if they planned to give him ten names. His remarks sparked laughter, but it was Abass Khalif’s response that stole the show.

Addressing the same rally, Abass reassured Ruto that the many nicknames were a sign of admiration from Kenyans. However, he reminded the president of his newest and most viral title.

“Now, it is about spreading the gospel of the president in this area. Mr. President, these youths love you. They are calling you so many names because they cherish you. Unajua umesahau moja, wamekuita El Chapo,” Abass declared, drawing cheers from the crow
The humorous moment lightened the atmosphere, with Ruto visibly entertained.
Why Is Ruto Called ‘El Chapo’?
The El Chapo nickname emerged after Ruto pledged to provide a chapati-making machine to Nairobi County.
However, the announcement triggered mixed reactions. Some leaders mocked the initiative, arguing that Nairobi had bigger problems to solve.
Criticism Over the Chapati Machine
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino criticized Sakaja for prioritizing a chapati-making machine over more pressing issues like unemployment and infrastructure.
Saboti MP Caleb Amisi also weighed in, accusing Sakaja of misplaced priorities. He argued that the focus should be on long-term solutions, not quick fixes.
Despite the backlash, Ruto and Sakaja defended the initiative, insisting it would improve food security in Nairobi.
Nicknames and Politics: A Kenyan Tradition
Ruto is no stranger to nicknames. From Hustler to Zakayo, each name reflects different aspects of his leadership and policies. The El Chapo tag, however, has taken on a life of its own, spreading rapidly across social media.
As Kenyans continue to follow his political journey, one thing is certain—Ruto’s list of nicknames is far from complete.
