Former IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati Dies at 63
Nairobi – Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati has passed away. His family confirmed the news, stating he died on Thursday, February 20, at 11 p.m. while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital.
Chebukati, 63, had been in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for nearly a week. His condition worsened despite initial treatment at home, leading to his hospitalization. However, his family has not disclosed the exact cause of his illness.
A Controversial Legacy in Kenya’s Elections
Chebukati served as IEBC chairperson for six years before retiring in January 2023. He played a key role in two of Kenya’s most disputed elections—the 2017 and 2022 General Elections.
In 2017, he declared Uhuru Kenyatta the winner against Raila Odinga, sparking nationwide protests. The Supreme Court later nullified the results, leading to a repeat election.
In 2022, he announced William Ruto as president amid tensions. Raila Odinga disputed the results, leading to yet another election crisis. Many credit Chebukati for standing firm, while others accuse him of overseeing flawed polls.
Mixed Reactions from Kenyans
News of Chebukati’s death has triggered mixed reactions. Some mourn his loss, while others reflect on his controversial role in Kenya’s elections.

Dr. Roselyn Akombe, a former IEBC official, wrote: “Rest in peace, Mr. Chairman.”
Senator Boni Khalwale expressed deep sorrow, saying: “A loss to the family, loss to many, loss to us. Fare thee well, my brother.”
Others reacted differently. One Twitter user posted: “I’m not celebrating his death, but Wafula Chebukati sold Kenyans out!!!”
Another noted the eerie pattern in IEBC chairpersons’ deaths: “Both Wafula Chebukati and Samuel Kivuitu died before the presidencies they declared victors ended.”
A Divisive Figure in Kenyan Politics
Chebukati’s tenure at the IEBC was marked by controversy. Many saw him as a courageous leader who upheld democracy, while others viewed him as a symbol of Kenya’s flawed electoral system.
As Kenyans continue to process the news of his passing, one thing is certain—his name will remain etched in the history of Kenya’s elections.
