Waititu Begs for Bail as He Fights 12-Year Jail Term

Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu is pleading for bail after starting his 12-year jail term. He was convicted for conflict of interest and receiving millions from Kiambu County through a fraudulent KSh 588 million roads tender.

Waititu, who began serving his sentence last Thursday, now wants to be released as he appeals his conviction. His legal team argues that he deserves bail, citing concerns over his health and the fairness of the ruling.

Legal Team Challenges Conviction

Waititu’s lawyers claim the magistrate’s court did not consider all the facts before sentencing him. They insist the ruling was harsh and want a higher court to review the case.

“We believe there were legal errors in the judgment. Our client should not be denied bail as he pursues justice,” one of his lawyers said.

Waititu’s family and allies have also expressed concern, saying the former governor deserves a fair hearing in his appeal.

Court Found Him Guilty of Fraud

The magistrate’s court found Waititu guilty of using his position to award himself county contracts. The case involved a controversial KSh 588 million road tender, where millions ended up in his accounts.

Prosecutors proved that Waititu personally benefited from the funds, leading to the 12-year jail term. His wife and other accomplices were also convicted in the high-profile corruption case.

Public Divided Over Waititu’s Plea

Kenyans have mixed reactions to Waititu’s request for bail. Some believe he should serve his full sentence, while others think he deserves a chance to appeal.

“If he stole from the people, he should remain in jail. Corruption must end,” one citizen commented.

Others argue that he should not be treated differently from other convicted leaders who received bail.

What Next for Waititu?

The court will decide whether to grant him bail as he fights to overturn his conviction. If denied, he will continue serving his sentence while his appeal moves forward.

As the legal battle unfolds, Kenyans wait to see if Waititu will walk free or serve his full term behind bars.
