Ex-IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati Critically Ill, Admitted to ICU

Nairobi – Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati is critically ill and undergoing treatment in a Nairobi hospital.

Chebukati, who retired in January 2023 after serving as IEBC Chair for six years, has been hospitalized for nearly a week. Hospital sources confirmed he is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), though details about his illness remain undisclosed.

Family and Medical Sources Speak Out

A source at the hospital revealed, “We are monitoring his situation at the ICU.” However, they did not specify the nature of his illness.

Close family members disclosed that Chebukati had been receiving treatment at home before his condition worsened, leading to his urgent admission to the hospital. His current health status has left many Kenyans deeply concerned, especially those who followed his leadership during two intense election cycles.

Chebukati’s Legacy and Service to Kenya

Chebukati left a lasting mark in Kenya’s electoral system. He oversaw the highly contested 2017 and 2022 General Elections, navigating intense political storms. His tenure was characterized by both praise and controversy, but he remained firm in upholding electoral integrity.
