Hostility in Nyeri: MP Duncan Mathenge Faces Backlash Over Gachagua Impeachment Support
Nyeri Town MP Duncan Maina Mathenge faced a stormy reception from constituents during his first public appearance since siding with calls to impeach former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Mathenge, aiming to rally support among Nyeri’s matatu operators at the town’s Downstage, was quickly met with fierce disapproval.
Upon arrival, Mathenge hoped to show solidarity with the matatu operators who are being forced to relocate to a new terminus. However, ardent supporters of Gachagua responded with hostility, making their dissatisfaction with Mathenge’s stance abundantly clear.

Shouts of “traitor” filled the air as matatu operators and other locals jeered at the MP, voicing their anger over his support for Gachagua’s removal. Mathenge, visibly shaken in videos circulating online, was soon overwhelmed by the crowd’s rejection.
Some members of the crowd demanded he leave, eventually forcing the MP to abandon the area and search for a more receptive audience. Later, Mathenge addressed supporters at a different matatu terminus, where he turned his criticism toward Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga.
Mathenge accused Kahiga of authoritarian tactics, claiming the governor often uses force when met with opposition. “Mutahi Kahiga is used to pumping his chest,” Mathenge said. “We are not moving our vehicles from this terminus; we’re informing you that we are not moving,” he declared defiantly.
Mathenge’s experience highlights the political tension within Mt. Kenya as leaders navigate the fallout from Gachagua’s ouster. For now, it seems that Mathenge and others who backed Gachagua’s impeachment may continue to face a divided and passionate public
