HOMA BAY, Kenya – Business activities in Homa Bay Town were brought to a standstill on Tuesday, August 4, after protests erupted following the arrest of six people linked to an alleged assault on members of the Linda Mwananchi rally planning team.

The demonstrations, which disrupted transport and commercial activities for several hours, saw groups of youths light bonfires, barricade major roads with burning tyres and debris, and engage police officers in running confrontations as security personnel worked to restore calm.

The unrest comes less than two weeks before the planned Linda Mwananchi opposition rally, scheduled for August 16, which has already generated heightened political attention in the lakeside county.

Police say the six suspects were arrested in connection with investigations into an alleged attack on individuals involved in organizing the upcoming political event.

Businesses Close as Roads Are Blocked

Witnesses said traders hurriedly closed shops as protesters occupied sections of the town centre, fearing that the demonstrations could escalate into violence.

Motorists were also forced to seek alternative routes after key roads became impassable due to burning tyres and makeshift barricades.

Public transport services experienced temporary delays as police attempted to clear the affected roads.

Several business owners expressed concern over the interruption, saying the protests affected normal trading activities during one of the busiest hours of the day.

Despite the tension, no major injuries or destruction of property had been officially reported by the time calm was restored.

Police Confirm Arrests

Homa Bay County Police Commander Lawrence Koilem confirmed that six suspects had been arrested in connection with the alleged assault on members of the Linda Mwananchi organizing committee.

According to the police commander, security agencies have intensified patrols across the town to maintain public order while investigations continue.

Authorities also deployed additional officers to strategic locations to prevent further disturbances and reassure residents.

Police maintained that the arrests were part of ongoing investigations and urged members of the public to remain calm as detectives establish the circumstances surrounding the reported assault.

The National Police Service has not disclosed the identities of the six suspects or indicated when they are expected to appear in court.

Political Tensions Rise Ahead of Rally

The demonstrations unfolded against a backdrop of increasing political activity ahead of the August 16 Linda Mwananchi rally, which organizers say will proceed as planned despite recent security concerns.

Leaders associated with the movement have accused unknown individuals of targeting their supporters during preparations for the event.

Linda Mwananchi Coordinator Samuel Nyauke claimed the alleged assault was part of a broader pattern aimed at intimidating opposition supporters.

“This is not an isolated case. There are several other cases, but for us we are saying we really want peace to prevail during our political journey, and the government is propagating that we are doing things that we have not done,” Nyauke said.

He called on authorities to ensure adequate security for all participants involved in organizing political activities regardless of their affiliations.

Organisers Raise Security Concerns

Nyauke further expressed dissatisfaction with what he described as inadequate protection for members of the rally’s planning team.

While insisting that the movement remains committed to peaceful political engagement, he said organizers were considering additional measures to safeguard their activities.

“We have decided that if the government cannot help us, then we shall find ways of dealing with our own security issues,” he added.

His remarks come amid growing debate over political freedoms and security arrangements as various political groups intensify preparations ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Authorities Appeal for Calm

Security officials have appealed to residents to avoid violence and allow police to conduct investigations into the alleged assault without interference.

Police reiterated that anyone found engaging in criminal activities, including destruction of property or incitement to violence, would face legal action.

Analysts say the latest unrest highlights the increasingly charged political atmosphere in several parts of the country as opposition groups continue organizing public rallies and grassroots mobilization campaigns.

For traders and residents of Homa Bay, however, the immediate concern remains restoring normal business operations after a day marked by uncertainty and disruption.

With the Linda Mwananchi rally only days away, security agencies are expected to increase surveillance and deploy additional officers to ensure the event proceeds peacefully while safeguarding public order and protecting constitutional rights to peaceful assembly.
