Tinubu to Visit Nairobi for Africa-France Summit Weeks After Viral Ruto Exchange
The visit comes ahead of the highly anticipated Africa-France Summit scheduled to begin on May 11 in Nairobi, where Tinubu will join several African leaders and international stakeholders to deliberate on key continental priorities. The summit will be co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron and President Ruto, underscoring its diplomatic significance.
According to a statement from Nigeria’s Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu will first travel to France before proceeding to Kenya for the summit. The meeting is expected to focus on strategic partnerships between Africa and France, with particular emphasis on energy transition, green industrialisation, digital transformation, and reforms in global financing systems.

In addition to plenary discussions, the summit—held under the theme “Africa Forward: Africa-France Partnerships for Innovation and Growth”—will spotlight climate action, infrastructure development, youth empowerment, and technological advancement across the continent. Delegates are also expected to address peace-building initiatives and explore sustainable economic models for Africa’s future.
Tinubu is expected to leverage the Nairobi platform to promote Nigeria’s economic reform agenda and attract investment, while also engaging in bilateral talks with African and global business leaders on the sidelines of the summit.
The situation escalated further after President Ruto made remarks during a diaspora engagement in Italy that were perceived as critical of Nigerian-accented English, triggering backlash across Nigeria and beyond. The exchange ignited a wave of digital debates centred on economic conditions, language, and national identity, amplifying tensions between online communities in the two countries.
However, in subsequent remarks delivered in Nairobi, President Ruto sought to de-escalate the situation, clarifying that his comments had been misinterpreted. “My remarks were taken out of context and were meant as light comparisons about English proficiency across Africa,” he stated, while reaffirming Kenya’s longstanding ties with Nigeria.

The President further struck a conciliatory tone, extending goodwill to Tinubu and emphasising the importance of unity among African nations. “Kenya and Nigeria share deep historical and economic ties, and we must continue working together for the benefit of our people,” he added.
After concluding his engagements in Kenya on May 12, Tinubu is expected to travel to Kigali, where he will attend the Africa CEO Forum scheduled for May 14–15. The forum is set to convene over 2,000 business leaders and policymakers to discuss strategies for accelerating intra-African trade and industrial growth.

As preparations for the summit intensify, attention remains firmly on Nairobi, where the convergence of global leaders is expected to shape the next phase of Africa’s engagement with international partners while reinforcing the continent’s collective voice on the global stage.
