Relief for Mike Sonko as Court Acquits Former Governor in Money Laundering Case
The ruling, delivered by a magistrate’s court in Nairobi, marks a significant development in a case that has drawn public attention over alleged financial misconduct during Sonko’s tenure at City Hall. However, despite the acquittal on the money laundering count, the former governor will still face trial over separate allegations related to irregular tendering processes.
In its determination, the court concluded that the prosecution had failed to establish a direct link between Sonko and the alleged money laundering activities. Delivering the ruling, the magistrate stated that “having reviewed the evidence presented by both the prosecution and the defence, the court finds no sufficient basis to sustain the charge of money laundering.”
The acquittal specifically applies to one of the charges levelled against Sonko, effectively clearing him of wrongdoing in that aspect of the case. Legal analysts have described the decision as a major relief for the former county boss, who has consistently denied all allegations against him.

However, the court ruled that Sonko still has a case to answer regarding claims of irregular tender awards during his time in office. According to the prosecution, the alleged irregularities relate to the procurement of heavy equipment valued at approximately Ksh14 million in 2018.
The court observed that evidence presented on the tendering process raised questions about possible manipulation and procedural breaches. As a result, the case will proceed to the defence stage, where Sonko will be required to respond to the remaining charges.
Court documents indicate that the prosecution argued the tendering process may have led to the loss of public funds, although no final determination has been made on the matter. The continuation of the case means that the former governor’s legal battles are far from over.
In earlier testimony before Magistrate Charles Ondieki, Sonko claimed that his legal troubles stem from resistance by individuals opposed to his policies. He alleged that “powerful individuals who were against my policies to develop Nairobi County and improve services conspired to bring me down.”

The former governor further told the court that he took decisive action against corruption while in office, including terminating contracts and dismissing officials implicated in a Ksh20 million graft scandal within the county’s revenue department.
The prosecution is expected to continue presenting its case as the matter proceeds, while Sonko’s defence team prepares to challenge the allegations and present evidence in his favour.
For now, the acquittal on the money laundering charge provides temporary relief for Sonko, even as he faces the next phase of legal scrutiny. Observers say the case underscores the complexities of high-profile corruption trials, where multiple charges are often pursued simultaneously.

As proceedings continue, attention will remain focused on the court’s handling of the remaining allegations and whether the prosecution can meet the required threshold of proof.
