7 Killed After Voxy and Trailer Collide Along Narok–Mai Mahiu Road

Seven people have lost their lives in a grisly road accident along the Narok–Mai Mahiu highway after a trailer reportedly lost control and rammed into a Toyota Voxy at Duka Moja, a notorious blackspot approximately 30 kilometres from Narok town.

The fatal crash, which occurred between Ntulele and Duka Moja, claimed the lives of all occupants of the Voxy on the spot, in what eyewitnesses described as a devastating and high-impact collision.

According to preliminary reports from witnesses at the scene, the trailer is believed to have developed brake failure before veering off its lane and crashing into the oncoming vehicle with immense force, leaving the smaller car completely mangled.

Emergency response teams were swiftly dispatched to the scene, where they began rescue and recovery operations amid challenging conditions. Images and videos circulating online showed the wreckage of the Voxy extensively damaged, with little chance of survival for those inside.

Authorities confirmed that traffic along the busy highway was significantly disrupted following the incident, with long queues forming as recovery teams worked to clear debris and remove the damaged vehicles from the road.

Motorists were urged to exercise caution when approaching the scene, slow down, and allow emergency personnel adequate space to carry out their operations.

“We are urging all motorists to be extremely cautious along this stretch, reduce speed, and cooperate with officers on site as we work to restore normal traffic flow,” an officer at the scene stated.

The Narok–Mai Mahiu road has long been associated with frequent and often fatal accidents, with Duka Moja emerging as one of the most dangerous sections due to its terrain and heavy traffic involving both private vehicles and long-distance trucks.

The latest tragedy comes barely months after another series of deadly crashes occurred in the same area in December 2024, highlighting ongoing safety concerns.

In one of the previous incidents, a trailer heading towards Mai Mahiu suffered a tyre burst, lost control, and rammed into multiple vehicles, including a bus, a matatu, and a Toyota Premio. The crash resulted in the deaths of three passengers in the matatu.

Moments later, a second trailer approaching the same scene at high speed ploughed into a Toyota Prado, killing two occupants instantly, while another victim later succumbed to injuries in hospital. The trailer also struck a motorcycle, killing two pillion passengers.

The recurrence of such accidents has intensified calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and improved safety measures along the highway.

Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicates that road accidents continue to pose a major challenge in Kenya, with at least 1,100 fatalities recorded between January and March this year alone.

In response to the rising numbers, the authority has announced plans to intensify crackdowns on non-compliant drivers and vehicles, particularly as schools reopen and traffic volumes increase across the country.

“We will be conducting targeted operations against reckless driving, unroadworthy vehicles, and violations of traffic rules to enhance road safety,” NTSA noted in a recent advisory.

Road safety experts have consistently pointed to mechanical failures, speeding, and human error as the leading causes of accidents on Kenyan roads, calling for both enforcement and public awareness campaigns to address the crisis.

As investigations into the Narok accident continue, families of the victims are left grappling with the sudden loss of their loved ones, while authorities renew calls for vigilance among road users.

The incident serves as yet another stark reminder of the dangers on Kenya’s highways and the urgent need for sustained efforts to reduce fatalities and improve road safety nationwide.
