Slovakia Opens Fully Funded Scholarships for Kenyans for 2026/2027 Academic Year

The Government of Slovakia has announced fully funded scholarship opportunities for Kenyan students for the 2026/2027 academic year, offering a rare chance for young scholars to pursue higher education in Europe.

In a joint notice issued on Tuesday, March 31, the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Nairobi and Kenya’s Ministry of Education confirmed that applications are now open for five scholarship slots under the Slovak government programme.

The initiative targets Kenyan students aged between 18 and 25 who wish to pursue bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral studies across a wide range of disciplines in public universities in Slovakia.

According to the Ministry, the scholarships are fully funded, covering tuition fees, accommodation, and a monthly subsistence allowance for the entire duration of study.

“The Government of the Slovak Republic is offering fully funded scholarships to Kenyan students for the 2026/2027 academic year in various fields of study at public universities in Slovakia,” the notice stated.

The programme spans diverse academic fields, including education, engineering, health sciences, agriculture, environmental studies, and technology. Specific courses available include Teacher Training and Education Science, Economics and Management, Biotechnology, Agriculture and Landscape, and Ecological and Environmental Sciences.

Other specialised programmes include Veterinary Medicine, General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Public Health, Nursing, Mechanical and Civil Engineering, as well as Computer Science and Cybernetics.

Education officials say the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen academic cooperation between Kenya and Slovakia, while also equipping young Kenyans with globally competitive skills.

Despite the comprehensive funding, the Ministry clarified that successful applicants will be required to meet their own travel costs to Slovakia. Airfare is estimated at between KSh120,000 and KSh150,000, and students are advised to have additional funds of approximately KSh120,000 to cater for initial expenses upon arrival.

A key requirement for the programme is language proficiency. Since all courses will be conducted in Slovak, selected candidates must first undergo an intensive language training programme before commencing their academic studies.

“Selected candidates will be required to undertake a one-year intensive Slovak language course before admission into their respective degree programmes,” the Ministry emphasised.

The preparatory language and academic course will be offered free of charge at Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica, running from September 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027.

The Ministry has outlined a detailed application process for interested candidates. Applicants are required to obtain official forms from the Ministry of Education offices or download them from its website under the scholarships section.

In addition, candidates must complete an online application and upload all required documentation through the Slovak Government scholarship portal by May 25, 2026.

Completed applications, accompanied by certified academic and personal documents, must be submitted physically to the Director of Higher Education at the Ministry’s headquarters in Nairobi, specifically at Telposta Towers, Room 2701, by April 30, 2026.

“Applicants are urged to strictly adhere to the application guidelines and timelines to avoid disqualification,” the Ministry cautioned.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the scholarship programme, noting that it provides an important opportunity for Kenyan students to gain international exposure and advanced training in specialised fields.

The Ministry further encouraged eligible students to take advantage of the initiative, describing it as a gateway to academic and professional growth.

“This scholarship offers a unique opportunity for Kenyan students to access quality education abroad and gain skills that will contribute to national development,” the notice added.

With global competition for fully funded scholarships intensifying, officials say timely and accurate applications will be critical for candidates hoping to secure one of the limited slots available
