WRC Safari Rally Stage 3 Cancelled Due to Poor Road Conditions Amid Heavy Rains

Organisers of the Safari Rally Kenya have cancelled one of Friday morning’s competitive stages after heavy overnight rains left sections of the route dangerously impassable, dealing an early blow to crews competing in the iconic endurance event.

Officials from the World Rally Championship (WRC) announced that SS3 Camp Moran 2, which was scheduled to open Friday’s action, would not proceed due to rapidly deteriorating road conditions.

“SS3 Camp Moran 2 has been cancelled due to deteriorating road conditions,” organisers confirmed in an official update released early Friday morning.

The cancellation follows intense rainfall on Thursday that soaked large parts of the rally route across the Great Rift Valley, turning gravel sections into muddy, rutted tracks and raising safety concerns for both drivers and spectators.

With SS3 scrapped, the day’s competitive programme will now begin with SS4 Loldia 1, scheduled to start at 9:11 a.m., effectively shortening the day’s running distance for participating crews.

Rally officials emphasized that the decision was made primarily for safety reasons, as the Safari Rally is already widely regarded as one of the most punishing rounds on the WRC calendar due to its unpredictable terrain, wildlife hazards, and rapidly changing weather conditions.

Despite the setback, teams continue to prepare for the remaining stages, which are expected to test both mechanical endurance and driving precision under challenging circumstances.

Thousands of fans had already gathered at designated viewing points around Naivasha, undeterred by muddy conditions and intermittent showers, to witness the high-speed action in person.

Many spectators arrived before dawn, navigating slippery roads and crowded access routes to secure vantage points along the course.

Local authorities have urged fans to exercise caution, noting that wet conditions significantly increase the risk of accidents, especially in remote areas with limited emergency access.

The Safari Rally, now in its third round of the 2026 WRC season, runs from March 12 to March 15 and is renowned for pushing vehicles to their limits through rough gravel roads, water crossings, and extreme dust or mud depending on weather conditions.

Drivers often describe the Kenyan leg as a survival test rather than a pure speed contest, where strategic pacing and vehicle preservation are as crucial as outright performance.

Event organisers reiterated that stage cancellations are sometimes unavoidable when weather conditions compromise safety standards set by the governing body.

“The safety of competitors, officials, and spectators remains our top priority when making decisions regarding stage running,” officials stated in a follow-up communication.

While the cancellation reduces competitive mileage, it may also alter race strategy, as teams rely on each stage to build time advantages or recover from earlier setbacks.

Some drivers could benefit from the shortened schedule if they had anticipated difficult conditions on the cancelled stage, while others may lose an opportunity to gain crucial seconds.

Local businesses in Naivasha and surrounding areas, which typically experience a surge in tourism during the rally weekend, continue to benefit from the influx of visitors despite the weather disruptions.

Hotels, campsites, and roadside vendors reported strong turnout, highlighting the rally’s economic significance to the region.

As the event progresses, organisers will continue monitoring weather patterns closely, with further adjustments possible if conditions worsen.

For now, attention shifts to the remaining stages, where crews will attempt to navigate treacherous terrain in pursuit of victory in one of motorsport’s most legendary and demanding competitions.
